The splashes of the freezing spillway mixed with the cold wind coming off the water sent chills down my back. I yawned, the loud purr of the tugboat next to us made it impossible to hear my uncle ask if I was tired. We were passing the train of barges right after we left the launch and were headed into the woods. I have done all this before. It was all familiar to me. The only difference was that I had never been out here this early. The eerie white light of the moon was the only thing that let us see right now. Luckily for us the moon was huge and full tonight. It was about 4:30 in the morning and we were speeding into the swamps of the spillway. I looked at my uncle and I saw him standing up, driving the boat, with a smile on his face. This was his job and he loved it. When you love the wilderness, being out in the woods for eight hours a day was a treat. Especially when it ended with picking up a paycheck of about a thousand dollars at the end of each of those days.…

The short story “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod embodies the idea of coming of age. It is an elegiac narrative dealing with the consequences of decision making. The story is of a professor at a Midwestern University who chooses to leave his fishing community in order to pursuit knowledge; however he is unhappy and sad about his present life. While the story unfolds the narrator’s past, he is trying to deal with his emotional struggle of rejecting tradition behind and excluding himself from the village he loved. Although he neglected the fishing life, the protagonist was torn between practicing tradition and the outside world. These two concepts of life leave him distressed as he affirms: “I wished that the two things I loved so dearly did not exclude each other in a manner that was so blunt and too clear” (19). After leaving his community, he now mourns over the loss of his father, his estrangement from his mother and the neglect of tradition and natural relationship between the sea and community, he dearly loved. This essay will explore how the narrator, who was once a part of the fishing world and tradition, now attempts to make sense of his life after having have to choose one between the two things he loved equally.…

Culture is the characteristics of a particular group of people, defined by language, religion, social habits, traditions, stories and music. “A nations culture resides in the heart and soul of its people”- Mahatma Gandi and this culture is kept alive by what they do. The texts we have studied in class “Yolngu Boy” and “Whale Rider” are excellent examples of how important cultural identity and belief are in communities. The other text that I have studied “Bran Nue Dae” is also a good example of this. In this essay I am going to be talking about what the texts have taught me about culture and how it has shaped my understanding.…

In the story "The Open Boat" the author, Stephen Crane, uses a lot of figurative language. Figurative language is used in this short story to give a valid picture of what the men are going through by comparing something that the reader probably hasn't seen. Examples of how figurative language works in this story are showing the comparison to how small the boat really is and how big the waves are. They are so big compared to the boat that they can't see anything but those waves. Other examples of uses of figurative language will be shown on later in this paper.…
