around the world that can bring out painful memories or make us act in a certain way, and these are called triggers. Triggers can be anything and it all depends on the certain person ("Getting Triggered"). According to the Netflix show, “Thirteen Reasons Why,” many people state that there are many triggers for people with mental health issues. The multiple sexual assaults and the showed suicide of Hannah Baker, make great examples of the triggers people are worried about (“13 Reasons Why”). Too much appearance of suicide in the media, experts say, can lead to more people deciding to take their own life. For instance, after the alleged suicide of the famous actress, Marilyn Monroe, was reported by the media, the suicide rates in the United States raised twelve percent ("What Went Wrong”). Triggers can affect anyone vulnerable to them, moreover the media must pay attention to how they are portraying potential triggers.
With triggers in “Thirteen Reasons Why” available to the world, many people are worried.
Even before the show was released, Netflix had met with mental health experts who had advised against releasing the soon to be Netflix hit. Dr. Dan Reidenberg, a mental health expert who had warned Netflix about releasing the show, said he was concerned about “Thirteen Reasons Why” and the brutality of the series. Not only are experts warning about the Netflix show, but also education systems are sending cautions. Schools around the United States are advising that the show should be watched with adult supervision and The National Association of School Psychologists has issued guidelines for educators about the way the show should be talked about with students. Even after Dr. Helen Hsu, a clinical psychologist with the city of Fremont, provided feedback on how the death of Hannah Baker should be handled, many experts, educators, and parents are anxious about the triggers shown throughout Netflix’s hit ("What Went …show more content…

There are always two sides to each story, and Netflix has their own in the situation with their impressive show, “Thirteen Reasons Why.” “While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting important conversation with their families,” states Netflix, “we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories.” Netflix, addressing the shows concerns, have added additional warnings to the triggers carried in their show ("Netflix Pledges”).
Nic Sheff, one of the writers of “Thirteen Reasons Why,” said that he was perfectly fine with how the show was carried out. “My own life was saved when the truth of suicide was finally held up for me to see in all its horror—and reality,” Nic later stated. While Netflix has added warnings to the show, they also believe that the powerful show could bring attention to the alarming facts about suicide in the United States and even the world ("What Went
Wrong”).
Netflix has always given viewers a great experience and have brought them into a new world only through a screen; nevertheless, “Thirteen Reasons Why” does exactly that. All can agree, supporting Netflix or not, that the thirteen show series was deeply powerful to all viewers, as they watched and listened to the reasons Hannah baker decide to take her own life. Even though the scene in which Hannah Baker committed suicide is very controversial, it is the most eminently capable, dynamic scene that has come to the screen in a long time. “Thirteen Reasons Why” has brought up many arguments, including the ones who believe the show could help those fighting a mental health issue against those who state ,contrarily, that the show could do much hurt. However, every viewer of the captivating show will remember its power and beauty.
