The Scope of Biology
Biology- Study of life
Biosphere- everything in the world
Ecosystem- consists of all the organisms living in a particular area
Community- all organisms that are living
Population- group of one species
Organism- individual living thing
Organ System- system of organs
Organ- makes up organ system
Tissue- Cells that make organs
Cell- unit of living matter separated from environment by a membrane
Organelle- a structure in a cell that has a specific task
Molecule- a cluster of atoms
Atoms- smallest part of matter
System order and Examples: BECPOOOTCOMA
Biosphere (The world)
Ecosystem (ocean)
Community (forest)
Population (blue jay pop)
Organism (flying fox bat)
Organ System (nervous and skeletal system)
Organ (brain, heart, lungs, ect)
Tissue (bone, muscle, nervous)
Cell (single cell organism)
Organelle (nucleus, chloroplast)
Molecule (water, fructose)
Atom (carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, water)
The Process of Science
Discovery Science- Science seeks a natural phenomenon. This science is about making observations and discovering things. Like a baby fox bat clings to its mother as it hunts.
Hypothesis driven science- this science is about asking questions and answering them. You must make a hypothesis before you can start.
Hypothesis- a tentative answer to a question. Usually an educated guess.
Scientific Method
Observations- my flashlight doesn’t work
Question- what’s wrong with my flashlight?
Hypothesis- the flashlight batteries are dead
Prediction- If this hypothesis is correct
Experiment- And I replace the batteries with new ones
Predicted result- then the flashlight should work again
Conclusion- The flashlight will work or it will not
Evolution, Unity and Diversity
-DNA is common to all organisms
Order- all organisms exhibit complex organization
Regulation- the environment outside organisms
Growth and Development- growth and development
