Based on class discussion/readings pick three controversial issues surrounding undercover work. The three controversial issues surrounding undercover work is corruption, costly, and deterrence is not long term. A lot of undercover work has involved issues with corruption because as an undercover agent you have to let the crime continue. You must also engage in crime in order to continue acting as a criminal. This can cause an issue such as losing your morals. If you constantly see bad things being done you get used to the crime that sometimes you may become a criminal. Another issue with undercover work is that it cost a lot of money to do the job. For example in the Wedding sting the police department couldn’t afford to actually pay for a wedding. Thankfully the police were able to help without blowing their cover. The reason for this is because communities of color are targeted as criminals. There is the image of drug dealers and gangsters in these communities. The community has a lot of poverty in it and this explains why there is more crime occurring in communities of color. I believe the whole community loses in this theory because the police are punishing people for small crime that is not serious. The police is so focused on punishing every rule broken that they are letting serious crime take place. The police become blind because they respond harshly to small crime and not focus on the whole picture. Also I believe this causes more crime because when police respond harshly to individuals who commit small crime it causes people to think the police is corrupt and no one is able to trust them.
