Time Monitoring Reflection
After completing the time monitoring worksheet, I was able to reflect areas that I need to improve on and brainstorm solutions for me to spend my time wisely.
As I monitored my activities during the last three days, I noticed bad habits along the way. As noted on the time sheet, I take about 2 hours to do my homework. However, between those two hours, I take about five minutes or 10 minutes to take check an email, social media site or take a glance at the television. I am certain that if I were productive for two hours doing my homework, I would have probably finished most, if not all, of my homework for the week. Reflecting back on my time sheet, I noticed how much free time I have.

Once you have completed the calendar as a preview/planner for work that is to come, take a few moments to review how you are doing with time management so far. Look back at the previous modules/weeks and consider your work this module/week to evaluate your use of time. Below the calendar, write a reflective paragraph (at least 100 words in 4–6 sentences) that describes (1) how you used time well to complete your course work, (2) what did not go very well, and (3) how you plan to change so that the problems are not repeated. Also, reflect on the following questions: Are you seeing any changes in the way you think about managing your time? Have you now minimized/eliminated any activities or changed any routines you followed before beginning this course in order to finish your course reading and assignments?…

With respect to achieving the above objective, I intend to do some reading around the topic of time management. I have already worked my way through the Time Management Topic Guide and picked up some useful ideas and thoughts (for example I have experimented with setting goals and keeping a time log). I have begun to build on that by researching other resources on the internet of which there is a vast selection. In addition, a colleague has recommended the One…

High school students are required to attend seven hours of school, five days a week, until they’ve completed 12 years of education. In addition, students are expected to complete schoolwork after the hours of school. This homework given to students is often viewed as an undesirable task. Students have the right to enjoy their leisure time after completing seven hours of brain draining school and not have to complete any more exhausting schoolwork. However, this is not the case. After enduring long hours at school, students are assigned homework every night and are expected to complete these tedious tasks by next class. Homework can take up to hours, sometimes even days to complete. It extracts all the energy from these fatigued students, leaving no energy left for physical exercise leading to the idea of unhealthy matters. In order to prove this, let the facts be told.…

As I disappointingly see my grades on canvas I tell myself that once I get home from school I will finish my homework and papers almost due before work today. I have four quizzes and two excel worksheets to work complete. I have three hours and a half to finish these before midnight. As I’m done with my first quiz I decided to take a little break so I take a glimpse at my phone and decide to watch just an episode of “Vampire Diaries” and next time I know its 5 o’clock and I’ve watched four episodes of the show. I just wasted all the time I had to finish my homework and now I have to finish it after work which I get out at 9:30 pm. There was no way I would finish on time with good scores.…

Conducting a time analysis was a pretty eye opening experience for me. I analyzed my time from Saturday 6/15 through Friday 6/21. As a family man, the fact that I spend a great deal of my time, over half, during the course of a week working and sleeping is somewhat unsettling (see Figure 1 – Weekly Time Analysis). I spend an average of 55 hours per week working, a minimum of 11 hours each day, 5 days a week. I slept approximately 5-6 hours per night, a total of 40 hours for the week. The combination of the two is about 56.5% of my week’s time. Studying took up around 20 hours or approximately 12 %. I spent 7 hours in my car during the week, which was to and from work for the most part. Family time, eating, and recreation was a total of 43 combined hours or 25.6%. “Other” consisted of a handful of other activities and was about 3 hours of my week. Seeing how few hours I actually spend with my family doesn’t sit well. Yet, knowing I work the long hours I do for the betterment of my family makes it all worth it.…

Switching the subject to time management, I have been monitoring my studying time. To be honest, I have not been studying as much as I should, but it has been enough to keep my goals in reach. The amount of studying that I do, helped me accomplish all A’s and one B. Time the management is valuable because it keeps me focus and I would recommend it to first year students, because it might keep them focus on accomplishing their goals.…

I awake before the sun. When I rise, I am greeted by the comforting darkness of the night, lulling me back to sleep. I engage in the daily brawl against my bed, struggling to get up. After a rough victory, I get out and start my day. I reach school by 8:00, where I spend the next 7 hours listening to the droning of teachers, laboring over assignments, and killing trees by taking pages of notes. Now, this scenario is not uncommon among most students. The average profile of several students shows that they take 6 AP’s, are part of 10 different clubs, and do 3 sports. To any normal person, it is obvious that this rigorous schedule would teach responsibility and time-management. I, however, learned something else: multitasking is not as useful…

A common phrase among young adults in secondary education is that there are three parts to high school life: social life, grades, and sleep. Pick two. Clifton Parker, on a study by education scholar Denise Pope, states “spending too much time on homework mean[s] students [are] ‘not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills,’” Students [are] more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family, and not pursue hobbies they enjoy.” To achieve grades that fulfill collegiate ambitions, students must spend all of the time they may spend with family or friends on the homework that earns them points. Teachers often assume that a student’s overall productivity is defined by the amount of work completed in a night. Many end up assigning at least an hour of homework to assure themselves that the kids are learning. Real life productivity is defined by advancement and development of character or leadership. Through that lens, completing busywork is not productive. Once students reach the real world, they are underprepared and underdeveloped to face day to day challenges. In an interview, Christine Gross-Loh quotes Krista Kuru, Finnish Education Chief, describing the reasoning against this approach. She states “Academics isn't all kids need. Kids need so much more. School should be where we teach the meaning of life; where kids learn they are needed; where they can learn community skills.…

Dr. Pitcher believes that one of the primary reasons students fail in college is failing to understand the amount of work required (Pitcher, 2012). Students who may have been in the past exceptional students whether in high school or at another college may have a shell-shock experience when entering college for the first time or transferring schools. They may have unreasonable expectations in the amount of time they need to dedicate to doing homework, reviewing notes and preparing for exams. Scholars say that you should on average dedicate two hours for each hour you spend in a class room. That means if you spend four hours in a classroom each week you should be spending minimally 8 hours outside of the classroom to guarantee success. However, that is on average; if you are struggling in that class or if the work requires that amount could easily double or trip. If students, fail to dedicate that time from the start of their academic career they may find themselves overwhelmed as classes’ progress and become more difficult.…
