To Make the World a Better Place

To Make the World a Better Place In order to make the world a better place to live in, instead of thinking big like most of us feel the need to (living in poverty ridden lands to feed the hungry, building homeless shelters, ect.), in college, I feel that I am going to start small in a sense though not excluding the possibility of doing something extensive in later years. The way I want to make at least where I live a better place is through helping people in need, by being a light in a dark world. Though I have not been to college yet, from what I have heard it seems pretty corrupt and perverse, from getting the amount of freedom we do all at once. If I can, I want to be there for anybody who will listen, to help save themselves in the long run, or at least in their college life, to make better choices. Although this idea might seem completely lame to some, it is what I have been brought up to believe, to try to show Jesus to all I meet to the best of my ability. In doing so, it is my hope that others will join me and it might become a sort of “pass it forward” kind of theme. This at least is my hope for my college life, to maybe volunteer at soup kitchens, and other volunteer opportunities when time allows. Though these small acts might not “change the world”, they will at least get me in a state of wanting to make the world a better place, so when I get out of college actually have the time and resources to do something substantial, it will be in my second nature, and it will be easier to find great things in which to help my community, and the world a better place. One extensive thing that I feel like I might want to do when I get older is to help build water wells in foreign countries to help out the people who have no clean water. One well give water to a whole town for years to come, which is a pretty decent

West believes that college should make us think about the greater good of the community rather than the greater good for ourselves. I completely agree with West on this point, although college for some pushes them more towards the materialistic. A large number of students attend college for completely superficial reason, to get a good job, to advance in their company, etc. We as humans are all innately altruistic; it’s through social influences that we become egotistical. West believes that a true college education should move us back towards our natural altruistic ways. If the community fails, so do…

I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…

Bringing people together encouraging human unity is a gift. Participating in service demonstrates that a person cares for others. There is no measurement for service to society, it is what helps to make the world a better place. I provide service regularly at my church, City Of Faith Church Of God. The congregation inspires me to give as much of me to them, as I possibly can. Working at. The church food pantry brings me joy.feeding citizens who are without the basics, food, and seeing the look of relief on their faces is one of the greatest experiences. Additionally, preparing for the culmination of "Child's Month Celebration" has been a lot of fun. Designing the logo based on the theme of "Be A Winner and Join The Race" was a fulfilling role. As a nominee of the National Honors Society , my mind overflows with ideas of how we can serve in our community. Some tasks we can fulfill include visiting the elderly. I am certain that they would appreciate and enjoy us going to read and/or listen them. Helping to clean our school environment would also be a good use of our service. In addition, I believe that academic tutoring from members of the Honors Society to students at NFA, other schools in the district, and the public library would be very useful and effective. Our service is important and would be very effective in our…

I have always cherished the value of service and its effects on communities. A school class that I take that promotes service is Student Senate. A requirement for that class is ten hours of community service per trimester, and I have been a part of this group since sophomore year. This class is all about improving our school and creating an enjoyable environment for our students to be in. An example of this would be when I helped decorate the halls during themed weeks such as Spirit Week and Winterfest along with my fellow classmates.…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

I hope to pass out one blanket and one sandwich to the homeless who are not allowed in a shelter. I will be going downtown every Saturday for the next 4 weeks to pass out blankets and sandwiches. Doing this project will change the world by helping people who are starving and freezing to death. I am doing this project for two reasons. The first reason is because I was assigned this project for 8th grade English class. The second reason is because I think everyone deserves to be warm, provided with food, and have their physical needs met. I am glad that we have this project because it makes me think harder about how I can make an impact on the world.…
