Firstly, seeing an interlocutor in person is much more interesting than using a phone or e-mail. It is possible to arrange a meeting with him in a restaurant, café or in a meeting-room. For example, I love spending time with my friends in bars and cafes, we could chat and have the best memorable time together. We usually discuss personal things, drink coffee, chat and laugh a lot. These things make my life more interesting and fun so I prefer seeing my friends in person rather than talking to phone or texting them. Seeing an interlocutor face to face could help in building good relationships with a person. For example, sending a message or a letter might be too official for a person. Speaking about myself, once a friend of mine congratulate me for my birthday using SMS. I got angry because I would like to meet her and hear her wishes in person. That is why e-mails, messages might be too official in some cases.
Secondly, seeing an interlocutor face to face is a good way to understand him better. Understanding his body language is very important. When you see your companion, you can determine his gestures and their meanings, his attitude and character. For example, when somebody is not sure in the information he is giving, he touches his forehead or nose. When a person is listening to you attentively, he looks in your eyes with an interest, when a person lies, he usually do not look at you at all or tries not to have an eye-contact.
