This particular area has a huge influence on learning and an individual’s ability to receive information and respond (Carrion & Wong, 2012). This area of the brain is important because it allows us to be able to process and think through information and engage in task that are objective in nature (Carrion & Wong, 2012).
There are a few brain structures that are related to spiritual activity (Roehlkepartin, King, Wagener and Benson, 2016). One structure that can be impacted during trauma is the frontal (cortex); during prayer and reflection this area is known to change and create an emotional reaction (Roehlkepartin, King,Wagener and Benson, 2016). Natural disaster can create a high level of stress, fear and so many other emotions that are traumatic. In 2010 an earthquake and tsunami occurred in Chile that affect nearly 3 million people that left so many displaced without food, water, shelter and peace (García, Rovira, Zurtia, Martel and Reyes, 2010). There is a great bit of research on childhood incidents impact early learning and cognitive ability but there is not a lot of research as it relates to college level. One area of research that would further provide insight and understanding to childhood trauma is to examine the affects of childhood trauma and the impact it has on African- American students in college. This research is significant because it would provide us with information as to why particular ethnic groups and populations excel or in some instances do not excel. Research suggest that going to college is an exciting time but for individuals with PTSD or those who have suffered through traumatic events could be present a few problems (Boyraz, Horne, Owens, & Armstrong, 2013). They also suggest that students who come from a lower SES are at a greater because they come from a less financially secure family and they live areas that put them at risk (Boyraz, Horne, Owens, & Armstrong, 2013). This research would not help us see how African American students’ perseverance after childhood trauma but how their new environment will influence them
