My Trip to London
On September 5, 2005 My School had to select a few students to attend a conference at Villar High School in England. Only a handful of students could be chosen and among them all, I had the chance of being selected as one of the lucky few. The moment I heard my name, I didn’t know whether I should be excited or remain stunned. My body and mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions I couldn’t express all at once. I could only begin to imagine the thought of going to England with my classmates. I wasn’t the only eager one, my classmates shared my enthusiasm.
That night I was barely able to sleep, my mind kept wandering to the thought of going to England. The following day we were taken to the embassy to get our VISA cards by our teacher, who was joining us on the trip. A week later my VISA finally came through; I could barely contain my happiness. It wasn’t long after, we packed up our bags to go to the airport.
For many of us it was our first time flying. I was curious and I felt anxious at the same time of being up in the air. After a tiring, exhilarating flight the plane landed at Heathrow Airport. We were all startled at the sight of the massive facility. It lived up to its name as the largest airport in the world. I couldn’t speak for the others, but I was exhausted. I was grateful for the chance to take a quick break and relax. After another while, we finally reached the location that was arranged for us to stay at.
My friend and I chose to stay in a room together. We were no longer tired; instead the night was full of laughter and comical stories. I lost track of how late we had stayed awake. The next day, bright and early we arrived at the conference hall at Villar High School.
Our school was one from many from around the world attending this conference. The topic selected was global warming. It began with a lecture on the topic at hand and it was followed by a theatrical performance. After, all the representatives from each

Amber was finally graduating high school. She could not wait for it to come any faster. I told her that she needed to slow down and not grow up so fast, but here she was graduating high school. Amber graduated with honors and in the top ten. I was so glad that she followed in her mother’s footsteps. Accepted to Juilliard for dance, Amber left that following August. I cried the whole time I watched that plane leave. New York was a long way from home.…

Stepping off the plane and arriving to Jamaica was a very big culture shock. I was in awe of the beautiful landscape that covered the island. The food was different and the climate was very hot and sticky. On the third night I threw up because my body was not adjusting to all the changes. Closing my eyes, I wished that I could go home and stay in my bed. I wanted to be in air conditioning and sleep for the rest of the day. But I couldn’t. I needed to get up. I needed to help build the school. So that’s what I did. I got up from sitting next to the toilet, drank some water, had breakfast, and helped my group pour concrete.…

Arriving by bus in Williamsport after saying goodbye to our families was surreal. We had worked so hard for this, I could not believe our dream was now a reality. I was excited, yet nervous and scared about the TV cameras. I had no idea what to expect. I was anxious about meeting our dorm mates who were from Japan; would the language barrier be an issue? I soon realized we would be fine and words are not always necessary to communicate.…

A rotating glass door marks the entrance of the busy terminal. Restaurants and Cafes which line the Terminal, wafting the thick scent of delicious fudge cake and hot baked pastries towards the people passing. “Flight 16 to Dubai will be departing shortly” an impersonal voice states on the intercom, causing some of the passers to race into their wallets and make a quick purchase before rushing out again . Lounging on a leather sofa in one Cafe, a married couple chat happily to one another, occasionally glancing over their shoulder to see if their two young boys are still there beside the window looking out to the airport. Fascinated, the boys gaze through the window into the distance; there eyes fixed on a plane manoeuvring through the mountainous region before swooping down and gliding above the runway, then, parting perfectly, as an eagle would across a lake to catch its prey.…

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return” Leonardo da Vinci. For me, the fear of the unknown can be very exciting. My first encounter flying through the skies was a miraculous one. The fierce lift off of the plane, the courteous service of the attendants, and the final landing in London England are memories that I long to repeat. The view of the beauty of the world from above is one memory that only the experience of flying can provide.…

I knew at once that we had arrived. Colorful flags adorned the top of a very high walled entrance. It looked like a castle with the entrance resembling a port cullis. It was a sight that made me feel the excitement of the occasion. My little brother's elation was more obvious, as he bounced up and down in his seat as if he was suspended by elastic. He was buzzing with excitement. As the coach pulled to a halt we hurried down the steps to the gate. Queues gathered at each entrance gate and as…

It was an unpredictable weather in the summer of 2011, with a mixture of vague feeling of excitement and edginess. I was excited since not only will our relatives and I celebrate our family reunion by having a five-day Luzon trip last April, but also will it be the first time that I would meet my cousins visiting from Florida, Unites States. Edgy, confused, and a bit worried are somewhat my mood due to a simple fact that I have not been practicing my English. Both initially feeling troubled and enthused, these had been unnecessary by the end of the trip since I have pondered many things from that long week of fun and adventure. Our Luzon trip, reuniting the family, therefore, was meaningful not only because it became a very exuberant and a good bonding occasion, but it was also because of the many things I’ve learned from them and from myself.…

One day, I was gazing out the window as the rain poured. My parents came into my room and told me very exciting news; we were leaving for America. Even though my parents thought leaving the country was a good thing, I was conflicted feeling happy and sad because I was leaving my beloved country, Yemen. I thought of everything that I was going to leave behind, everything that had been familiar to me for thirteen years: Family, Friends, teachers, and mostly my community. I thought to myself: “How am I supposed to let go of all that I hold near and dear to my heart?” The only fear I had was how I would fit in when I didn’t know how to speak any English. There were a lot of obstacles that I had faced during my first semester. I had to challenge myself to be better and improve my language in anyway in English and my focused was how I'm going to success in school.…
