Lost My Scholarship
“Dad, I got it. I passed the test, I got it.”
It was a sunny day in Jakarta, the capital city in Indonesia. I remembered somebody stood next to me and held me with empathy as she watched me sobbing over the phone. I called my dad right after the scholarship representatives from one of the highly ranked secondary schools1 in Singapore told us about their decision that has changed my life forever; I was the chosen ones.
Of course there were any other scholarship recipients aside of myself to study in level 3 and 4 of secondary school (I was placed in certain level accordingly based on my age). But for me, the number of the selected ones was somehow surreal; only eight out of hundreds of talented students were chosen. At the point of time, I was overjoyed not because of the fact that I have defeated hundreds of students across the country; or the fact that I received one of the most prestigious scholarships to study overseas with no charge (completely free, accommodation provided and I received quarterly pocket money); but instead, I could finally make my parents proud for having me as their daughter.
I was only 15 back then when I first moved out from the family. I was too young; and too green to leave the house. It was eight of us, barely knew each other, waited for our departure to Singapore, one of the leading world-class education hubs in Asia. We felt uncomfortable at first, but we started to have more and more conversations. Laughter filled the boarding lounge, but something inside me sensed something unusual; loneliness.
In Singapore, I became a friend to many other students from across Asia as we lived together in the same dormitory. Adapting to the environment wasn’t hard for me as both Singapore and Indonesia have similar tropical climate and exotic food; the only significant difference was Singapore had a remarkably clean environment (unlike Indonesia); they
