True friendship is key in life. When you have friends who are there by your side and that will help you through life, they are friends that you should be with forever. In Dick Francis’s novel, To The Hilt you find out what true friendships Alexander has when his friends help him save a race horse that is in threat and ending his sister's jealousy. Alexander’s friends never give up on him and are there for him through everything. They show true friendship to Alexander and Alexander shows his appreciation to them. When the conflict occurs Alexander and his friends solve it while his friends show true friendship by helping him through the conflict. Alexander is sent a letter from his mother about his stepfather and how he is ill after his heart attack. He was told that his stepfather was sick after worrying about millions of pounds that have gone missing and the special race horse that is in threat, being stressed and harassed. “As long as horse slaughter remains a legal option for our nation’s equines, no horse—wild or domestic—is safe.”(ASPCA). He later finds out from his stepfather that his race horse is in threat due to his step sister’s plan on stealing the horse so it cannot race.
