People often refer to the decade of 2000 - 2009 as the 00’s or TwentiOs. Time magazine’s front cover considered it to be, “The Decade from Hell” (MACKAY, Time Magazine Cover), which was possibly politically referred. However, many historical events occurred through the decade, along with technology at their highest, change in the way our society socialized, and millions of dollars spent whether people felt we were in a recession or just crying wolf. Currency was still circulating through our target markets. Society may have slowed down on their wants and needs, but the currency was still circulating through the target markets.
There were many major historical events that influenced our country and affected other nations. Such as, …show more content…
the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. The Iraq war, which was believed they had weapons of mass destruction and feared terrorist would devastate other countries as well. United States wanted to end the war on terror and began in 2002. On February 1, 2003, the Columbia Space Shuttle launched seven astronauts into space, but a problem occurred and it exploded over Texas. Hurricane Katrina of 2005, the third deadliest hurricane in United States history, killed at least 1500 people. Katrina made landfall in the United States at three different locations. Dec. 30, 2006 Saddam Hussein was hanged after he was captured and convicted, which caused some political tension in the Iraq communities. Let us not forget, the first African American President elected, Barack Obama. Some things he has accomplished were, economic recovery bill, plans on ending war in Iraq, banned the torture of prisoners, inaugurated January 20, 2009, and beat John McClain in 2008. Finally, who could forget the death of Michael Jackson? He was found dead in his home on June 25, 2009 from cardiac arrest. Dr. Conrad Murray believed to have given Michael large amounts of medication and left Michael unmonitored. These were just a few historical events that captivated me throughout the decade. Transportation keeps evolving as the twentiOs crept up on us. The type of fuel and the energy sources that transported vehicles were more resourceful. It became an efficient way of getting from one place to another. The first Prius, model NHW10, went on sale December 10, 1997. However, it was available only in Japan. Even though, it has been imported privately to at least the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Toyota released the Toyota Prius, the first hybrid four-door sedan, available in the United States in 2000. Hybrid cars use a gasoline or diesel engine to power a motor. When the power of the motor is not required to move the vehicle, the motor can shut off, saving energy, or can be used to generate electricity that is stored in batteries, and later used to power the car. Between 2004 and 2009 it is estimated that 1.25 million of these vehicles were sold in the United States. To this day the Prius is still the most popular vehicle of its kind (Rehan).
The inventions of the 00’s decade sprouted with gadgets that we never thought would be conveniently hand-held, played with body motions, just a touch of the finger or the tone of a voice. In addition to popular toys of the decade being sold by the millions. IPods were released on Oct. 23, 2001. The small hand held device allowed millions around the world to have portable music players with good quality. Many used this item in their everyday life and even when exercising. In 2003, Fisher Price released the Hokey Pokey Elmo, which is an interactive plush toy. Following in 2004, they produced three mini hokey pokey toys to dance with Elmo. One being a mini version of Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Ernie. November 19, 2006, Wii is the home gaming console by Nintendo which is compared to the Xbox 360 nowadays because it gives high definition graphics and supports HDMI. It consist of a controller called a wiimote and has many extension one of which is the most popular named the Nunchuck, consisting of an analogue and a single shoulder button used in many games like Wii Boxing and Silent Hill Shattered Memories (Rehan). Steve Jobs announced on January 9, 2007, the new iPhone at the Macworld convention. On June 29, 2007, Apple began selling the new iPhone. A few more great entertainment inventions that took over social media were MySpace invented in 2003, which led millions around the world to interact with each other. Facebook, which went live February 2004, is now the second most-visited Web site in the world—and there's plenty to do when you get there. Members share personal trivia, likes and dislikes, videos, virtual gifts, and links to news stories. Facebook is the Web's largest photo-sharing site, with more than 2.5 billion photos uploaded each month. Businesses and organizations now connect with customers and members via Fan pages (Fairlie). Also, You-Tube invented in 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. YouTube was named Time Magazines Invention of the year in 2006. Entertainment of the decade was a blast.
One of my favorites is a comedian and ventriloquist, Jeffrey Dunham. His reputation as a ventriloquist grew in the greater-Dallas community, so did the size of his targets. It would take almost another decade for the hard working Dunham to achieve true mainstream success. That started to happen in 2006, after years of resistance, Comedy Central changed course and decided to showcase Dunham's self-produced one-hour special, Arguing with Myself. The results were astounding. More than two million viewers tuned in to see the ventriloquist, prompting the network to book him again. That second performance, 2007's Spark of Insanity, hauled in record ratings and sold more than a million DVDs. His follow-up the next year, A Very Special Christmas Special, delivered similar results (Editors). Now, let me back up a bit with some popular television shows. Reality television exploded in popularity following the launch of Survivor in the United States in 2000. This style of television claims to be entirely unscripted and usually features ordinary people instead of famous actors in dramatic or humorous situations. Another reality show, American Idol, which began in 2002, features people competing against each other for a recording contract. It is claimed by some to be one of the most revolutionary shows in television history. In 2003, the Wicked became an onstage performance. Many people think of this box-office empress as a deconstruction of The Wizard of Oz and its characters. In fact, this Stephen Schwartz smash is a double reinvention. Gregory Maguire’s novel, the musical’s source material, is remarkably different than the Broadway show. Its humor is dark, its tone often broods, and the text abound with philosophical ambitions. The stage version, penned by My So-Called Life creator Winnie Holzman, focuses on the friendship between the green-skinned Elphaba and Glinda, the bubbly, blonde and supposedly “good” witch
(Bradford).
Foods changed through this decade. Especially, reflecting back on the 9/11 attack. In 2002 Americans turned to meatloaf, chicken pot pie, mac 'n cheese, pizza, and all things comforting. Although, the cupcake craze hit it big in 2000. Carrie Bradshaw hits New York City's cupcake mecca Magnolia Bakery on Sex and the City, igniting the cupcake trend. Over the next several years, popular New York- and Los Angeles-based cupcake shops like Crumbs and Sprinkles expand into multi-state franchises; local cupcakeries sprout up on street corners galore (Tannenbaum). In 2006 became the organic overflow of the decade. The organic food movement goes mainstream in a big way when Wal-Mart jumps on the bandwagon, stocking quality organic products at good ole Wal-Mart prices: just 10% more than their conventional foods. According to the Organic Trade Association, annual sales of organic food hit $24 billion by 2009, a more than fivefold increase from a decade earlier (Tannenbaum).
The most popular casual look for work and weekend at the beginning of the decade for women were low-rise jeans or trousers with full or flared legs. When worn in combination with a crop top, the toned tummy became the new erogenous zone but pudgy muffin tops were the reality. In the middle of the decade flares disappeared and tight tapered styles and leggings reappeared; waistlines also moved back up to the top of the hips. Crop tops were abandoned in favor of more modest empire-waist peasant tops, making an entire generation of women look like unwed mothers. The biggest non-fashion event of the 2000s was the return of the poncho. Ponchos were in fashion for about 3 minutes in the winter of 2004/2005 (Jonathan). The fashion trend of the skinny jean took hold like no other during the decade. First, they were tucked into boots, then worn with ballet flats and then they transformed into denim leggings (“jeggings”). Tattered/grommetted/whiskered styles had a moment at the beginning of the decade, then it turned to cleaner styles and stylish jeans for moms, and then tattered re-emerged with the boyfriend jean. By the end of 2009, it’s clear that any style of jean goes. For dressier occasions, the baby doll dress lasted most of the decade. Mainly worn with dark stockings or no stockings at all. Celebrity brands exploded in the 2000s. In most cases the celebrities had marginal input into the design and only loaned their name for branding (Hemphill). Finally, fashion for the men were the popped collars. Often time’s men would wear one to two collared shirts to show more pop collar effect. Tee shirts claiming you were a member of an athletic club, along with extremely distressed jeans, or the oversized baggy cargo shorts. In addition to the belts with at least three rows of studs. Patchwork denim jackets and many men wore the Livestrong bracelets. Many wore nylon or velour pants, likely from Adidas and Ed Hardy anything (Davis). I will also add the spiked hair style, which made men feel four inches taller.
The two famous personalities of TwentiOs, which I chose are Oprah Winfrey and Pope Benedict XVI. I find Oprah Winfrey an astonishing woman who never stopped achieving goals. Here are just a few. April 2000, Oprah Launches "O, The Oprah Magazine," and the Oxygen Network. February 2003, Oprah became the first African-American woman on Forbes magazine's "World's Richest People" list, with a net worth of about $1 billion. September 13, 2004, began a new season of Oprah Winfrey’s talk show when she gave each member of the audience a brand-new car. January 2, 2007, The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls opens in Henley-on-Klip, South Africa. The school houses 152 girls from deprived backgrounds and provides them with an education. Winfrey has reportedly spent $40 million dollars opening the school. January 15, 2008, Winfrey and Discovery Communications announce that beginning in 2009 the Discovery Health Channel will be renamed OWN: The Oprah Winfrey
Network (CNN). Finally, Pope Benedict XVI, I find interesting and look forward to reading the book he published in 2007. Here are a few things about him through the decade. On April 19, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Alois Ratzinger) was elected the 265th pope of the Roman Catholic Church following the death of his predecessor John Paul II (April 2). Inaugurated on April 24, 2005, at age 78, he is the oldest pope in nearly 300 years and the first German pope in almost 500 years. He presided over the funeral of Pope John Paul II. In 2007, he published the popular Jesus of Nazareth, the first of a three-part study on the life of Jesus (Fairchild).
In between 2000 – 2009 much changed in home design. Everything had to be shinny with stainless steel. Stainless steel was, in fact, the color of the decade. Anywhere from appliances, faucets, light fixtures, to door hinges. In addition to movement towards smaller homes and less glitz. Also, incorporating neutral, soft colors for interior, and exterior. In 2005, a darker color became popular named, chili pepper. Then the colors starting toning back down until 2009 when the color of mimosa became popular. Throughout the decade stainless steel stood firm. In 2006, Keurig blew away their competition by creating a one cup coffee maker that could also be used to make tea, hot chocolate and other consuming things (Cross Country Cafe). Blu-ray came out in 2006, giving a more vibrant colors and clear picture to view movies.
