Introduction
There is more than 350 types of dogs currently in the world. Some of them are pure breeds and some others are mixed-breeds. There are 5 main categories of breeds.

First there is the herding group. These are very intelligent animals with an innate instinct for herding and protecting, making them excellent as guard dogs and cattle herders. They are a charm to train and are very loving companions. They are sometimes used as therapy dogs, police dogs and guide dogs. These breeds require daily exercise as they are very active. Then there is the hound group which was developed to assist man in hunting for food and sport. Several of them have have an extremely sharp and developed vision. Some others have a very acute sense of smell. Every hound has incredible stamina and are very fast runners. Swift and agile, they make wonderful comrades to humans.
Sporting dogs make excellent partners for people who have active lifestyles. They are full of energy and need lots of exercise on a daily basis. Retrievers, pointers and setters are part of this group. Lovable and very alert, these energetic dogs make ideal partners.
The working dogs were bred to assist man in jobs like guarding and rescuing as well as pulling sleds. The working dogs are of formidable size and stature. They have to be properly trained in order to be a good ally to the human. They are best suited for working rather than for being family pets as not having purpose in life can lead to unhappiness and behavioral issues. In addition to that, they are extremely loyal and dependable dogs.

When choosing a dog, families should consider the temperament, physical size, and exercise needs of the breeds they are considering. Researching the characteristics of the dogs the families are considering is a great way to ensure the families ends up with a dog that will complement their family environment and lifestyle. The breed that is most commonly picked to be used as a service dog is the Labrador retriever. According to Moore (1995-1996) “Approximately 60-70% of all working guides in the U.S. are Labradors.” This breed of dog is used because of how smart they are, they want to work to please you, and they are large enough to fit in public places. Several occasions I have watched service dogs come in to a restaurant and not be bothered by all the commotion; they will just lie quietly under the table at the feet of their owner. This is the number one reason the Lab is most often picked to be a service dog.…
