Alison first met Tori in her seventh-grade class. The readers could know that Tori was a girl with a perfect appearance from Alison's description “I couldn't stand to be around her. Nearly everybody I knew thought she was perfect, but right from the beginning, I sensed something wrong with her” (134). Alison was for sure being jealous of Tori. But her perception of Tori didn't only go wronger because of that. Firstly, Alison thought Tori blamed her to the judges on the Poetry Contest, which made her lost her first place. Secondly, she told the teacher that she saw Tori breaking up the sound equipment of Lara. Lastly, Tori also thought Alison spread nasty rumors about her being adopted, so she questioned Alison and was mad at her. Hence, all these small pieces of misunderstanding between them resulted in a bad perception of Tori. Bute later on, when Alison met Tori again in the Space Station, they eventually had a chance to explain the things that happened to each other. Then Alison exclaimed that “for years, I’d envied Tori her popularity, her accomplishments, her seemingly unassailable self-confidence, only now was I being to realize how fragile all these things had been” (253).
