July 24, 2013 A cell phone is a two-way radio that sends and receives radio signals to and from cell site base stations. When a person talks on a cellular phone, the voice message gets converted into radio waves. The radio waves travel through air until they reach a base station close by. The base station sends the call across the communication network after which the call reaches the intended receive
Landline telephones use voice transmission where the transmitter and receiver are located in the handset. Powered by the line, the microphone produces an electrical current which varies its frequency and amplitude in response to the sound waves arriving at its diaphragm. The resulting current
is transmitted along the telephone line to the local exchange then on to the other phone where it passes through the coil of the receiver. The current in the coil produces a corresponding movement of the receiver 's diaphragm, reproducing the original sound waves present at the transmitter.
Short message service uses data (binary) to deliver short messages over mobile networks. It is a sure and forward way of transmitting messages to and from mobiles. The message (text only) from the sending mobile is stored in a central short message center which then forwards it to the destination mobile. A pager works basically the same way a radio does, it receives transmitted radio waves from an outside source. It takes the energy transmitted via radio wave and converts it into electrical impulse send to the devices that makes it beep.
VOIP phone systems use IP to carry voice over data networks. It enables voice to become another application accessible anywhere in the world with private networks or the Internet. VOIP is also an option for fax calls on the same IP network that transports voice and data applications but use a lower bit rate than VOIP voice calls. FaceTime and Skype use voice and data to allow users to communicate with other people over the Internet. Each application allows for video chatting, but there is a difference between the two. Skype is a full-featured Internet calling application, FaceTime is a more focused video chatting application where you have to have a camera attached.
