As there are no national minimum academic entry requirements for entry into pre-registration midwifery degrees, each higher education institution running courses sets its own criteria, however, higher education institution usually look for a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above which includes English language or literature and a science subject and or either two or three A levels or an equivalent.
Midwifery has many different qualifications which are necessary for the job which consist of degrees, GCSEs, BTEC and NVQs. Also it may consist on how long you have studied for and whether a practitioner needs to be registered. The qualifications that are need for this job are:
Five GCSEs at grade 1
NVQ intermediate level plus one GCSE/GCE O level at a grade A-C
There are many different qualifications which may be considered broadly equivalent to two A level which include:
NVQ advanced level or NVQ level 3
SVQ level 3
EDEXCEL foundation (BTEC) National or higher national diploma
OCR Cambridge technical which includes level 4 health and social care
Some applicant who has left full time education some time ago may be required to give evidence of successful recent academic study such as a QAA accredited access to higher education course or equivalent.
To train to be a midwife you have to take an approved midwifery degree. Alternatively, a qualified nurse can complete a midwifery short programme.
