Outcome 1 – Understand why communication is important in the workplace.
People communicate for many different reasons; this can be to express emotions such as fear, anger, pain, joy or love. Communication can play an important part in improving a person's quality of life, by being able to let other people know our likes, dislikes, needs etc, or to be able to connect emotionally with someone else. Humans by nature are very sociable creatures and being able to communicate helps us to achieve this.

Confidentiality means keeping personal information safe, so that electronic and written information cannot be accessed by anyone that doesn’t need to see it. Also not sharing someone's information without their prior consent. This is covered by the Data Protection Act 1998.
Best interest decisions to release confidential material can be made on the individual's behalf in certain circumstances. These can include if the information is required by a tribunal, a court or the ombudsman. Also for the protection of the community as a matter of public health. Some situations require information being presented to the police, for example if a serious crime is being investigated. This information can only be given to a senior ranking officer. Any information regarding child abuse must never be kept confidential, however if the abuse is directed towards an adult you would need their permission before discussing it with anyone else. If a person is a threat to themselves or anyone else it is justified in breaking their confidence to prevent any harm.
