|329 |1 |1 |At my work place I am required to follow any legislation and codes of practice related to support positive behaviour. I |
| | | |would be informed with any new legislation relating to positive behaviour. Also the staff will reinforce positive |
| | | |behaviour to the service user as it’s my duty in order for the service user to know how to behave with others and the |
| | | |staff. I hand out to each new service user a paper with the code of conduct this informs them how they should behave and |
| |2 |5 |also how I and my colleagues should behave towards the service users |
| | | | |
| |1 |2,3,5,4 |Although at work sometimes I do have challenging behaviour and when an incident happens such as a service user trying to |
| | | |start a scene or a fight with another service user the least restrictive interventions such as in an area where the right |
| | | |of an individual is restricted like in a private room is used because it is the only way to calm the person down and to |
| | | |give the service user some space to think but this method will only be used if there is an actual need for it.
For example|
| | | |there was an accident were a service user was shouting and being verbally abusive to several other service users. I |
| | | |approached the service user that was shouting. I spoke to the man in a way that had an immediate calming effect on him. I |
| | |1 |led the man out of the dining room which defused the danger of the incident from becoming violent. I went with the …show more content…
service|
| |5 | |user to the rear courtyard and I calmly approached the man in a calm manor. I informed the man that his behaviour was |
| | | |unacceptable and also informed him that it would be in my best interest if he ever became upset for any reason then he |
| | |1,3,4 |should approach me with any concerns that the service user had.
The end result was that I advised him what to do if he |
| |3 | |ever had any concern that he shouldn’t react in such a negative manor. I also made a record of the incident in the works |
| | | |incident book. Also when restrictive methods have been used the manager and the supervisor have to be informed. |
| | |2,3 |Other methods that may be used to return the individual to calm environment and promoting positive behaviour towards the |
| |4 | |individual and asking them to calm down and also to take the individual away from the incident also to take him outside |
| | | |for some fresh air and to talk about what briefly had happened also ask the individual to take a deep breathe this will |
| | | |help relieve most of their stress.. This will also bring the individual back to a calm state.
|
| | | |After the person has calmed down, their injuries are checked. I then take the individual to the nurse room and check for |
| | | |any injuries following the hygiene rules by wearing safety equipment when checking for injuries. If there are any serious |
| | | |injuries then the ambulance are called immediately if they are not then I or the nurse would use the first aid kit to |
| | |2 |recover the wound. |
| | | | |
| | | |Also when challenging behaviour aggressive behaviour and self-injurious behaviour, I and the staff understand that other |
| | | |factors may affect the change in behaviour. These factors include mental health, boredom, stress, physical health and |
| | | |others. For example an individual was aggressive to another service user because of the other service user was calling |
| | |1,2 |him names. When this incident happens the staff and I know what to do from previous experience and also from agreed ways |
| |2 | |of working with each other. We knew that the incident had to be dealt with and the individual had to be separated and we |
| | | |knew who to call if there was a major incident. |
| | | | |
| | | |Also reactive strategy was used as the incident was stopped. A reactive strategy would be to reduce challenging behaviour|
| | |2 |and also the service user would be aware of the consequence if there was challenging behaviour. Whereas proactive strategy|
| |3 | |is to produce changes over time and that is having staff meetings and analyse the incident and what had happened and how |
| | | |it could be reduced in the future. |
| | |3 |If the incident was not stopped or there was no reduction in mitigating challenging behaviour then the incident would have|
| |5 | |gone further and something worse could have happened. Therefore it is important to mitigate challenging behaviour and this|
| | | |will reduce further incidents from happening in the future. |
| | | | |
| | | |When the incident was stopped, there was a quiet environment as other individuals seemed to be surprised and other |
| | |5 |witnesses were frightened so the staff had support some witnesses as they seemed afraid. |
| | | | |
| | | |When the individual is in a calm state a member of staff will offer the support by talking to the individual in privacy |
| | | |and reflecting on what the individual has done. This will offer the individual support and the individual will be able to |
| | | |talk about his feelings and will be able to open up to a member of staff. A number of personal questions will be given to|
| | | |the individual such as how was he/she feeling after the event had happened. This support will make the individual realise |
| | | |that he can trust the staff and also will make the individual realise the consequence of his actions. Also the incident |
| | |4 |will be recorded in the ‘incident book’ writing all the details of what had happened including the time, date who was |
| |4 | |involved and what was decided. |
| | | | |
| | | |Also after the incident there is a discussion in the staff room about the incident as in order to analyse what had |
| | |1 |happened to let this aggressive behaviour take place, he will also be told the consequence of he/she behaviour which will|
| |6 | |be reported to the manager and the manager will decide on what will happen next. |
