Social Networking on the internet and social media has changed the way that the world does business and operates. You can no longer stick to the traditional ways of reaching customers such as newspaper ads or flyers sent through the mail. Although these forms are still used and I’m sure they are quite successful, nothing beats word of mouth and nothing beats word of mouth shared through social media and social networking. Social networking was originally based on six degrees of separation and is defined as expanding the amount of businesses and social contacts by making connections through other users or individuals. How many times have you wanted to try a product and asked a fellow co-worker or family member about it and they gave you a full review of the product or have even used the product in question? It doesn’t happen to often but social networking and social media gives you a platform to ask that very question and countless amounts of feedback and advice. The first of six key events that I think that shaped and modeled social networking to be the powerhouse that it is was the creation of Sixdegrees.com. This site was the first to create a user profile and list friends. I think this changed business views because the more friends that one person had, the more exposure and contact they had with products or information never heard of before. It is true that each city, state, and country tends to have their own following and ways of doing things. A good example would be home remedies for a cold. My aunt in Cincinnati, Ohio believes in drinking honey, lemon, and a drop of Vicks vapor rub. My grandmother in Selma, Alabama believes in gin and peppermint.
