University Honor Scholarship Essay
To me, the best leaders are the ones who are constantly striving to better themselves as leaders. My engagement as a University Honors student will benefit me twenty years from now because I know it will teach me to be a better leader. When I reflect on my current leadership positions as co-president of my Gay Straight Alliance and vice president of S Club, I realize most of what my involvement has been is me bettering myself so I can benefit others more. An example of this is the human relations camp I went to in February called Building Bridges. This camp made me a better leader because it taught me how to take difficult topics and educate people to progress towards a better society. Additionally, it taught me better communications skills so I can accurately convey what I mean to my peers. I have witnessed how programs geared towards leadership have benefited me before so I have no doubt about the honors program doing so. Additionally, the support I will have while in the …show more content…

Firstly, the community surrounding education and conversation is something unique and truly mesmerizing. I know that I am in a good place when my peers thoroughly enjoy discussing a multitude of topics, regardless of who they are, what they’re studying, and where they’ve come from. The Honors College is one of these places that gives everyone a voice and the ability to generate open discussions on various topics. Also, the undergraduate research that the Honors College provides will enable me to continue connecting with professors and delve into my passions within my major. Attending SASF’s after school program has helped me to improve my leadership skills,my citizenship, my service and my character. While attending SASF’s after school program three were many times when I had to take writing class. Attending writing class reflects good leadership skills because during writing class there were many times that the teacher divided the class into groups. We would be put with people we weren't familiar with to write a story together. During this time the teacher had always chosen a leader for each of the groups. I remember constantly being chosen as the leader of a group. When I was the leader of the group I would constantly check up on the others to make sure that they were doing the work correctly and when they had a problem I would try my best to help them. I believe that being constantly exposed to such situations as the leader has given me a lot of experience which has greatly increased my leadership skills.…

As a straight A student all my life I have to work extra hard each and every day to be able to accomplish even my simplest goals because I know I should always push myself to become better at beating the game, that is life. But while all this is true, I know that no matter how hard I work I cannot possibly achieve all my goals and dream no matter what actions I take, at least not alone. John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” This powerful words are extremely meaningful, especially to me. This means that if you try your hardest regularly to not only gain new knowledge, become more productive, make new goals and wonder about your future, and become a better you, no matter what circumstances you are under you are a person who will help others even unintentionally. Personally, I know it can sometimes be hard to get through the day while being alert and ready to work, but when I see someone who is dedicated to not only exceeding themselves but to make others succeed too, it makes me want to do the same. I always go out of my way to help others because that is what a real leader would do. Joining the Beta Club where each member is a leader will allow me to…

Throughout my high school years I have demonstrated that I embody the qualities of a leader. In ninth grade I took on a job at a café located at the center of the UNC campus, being the first of my friends to pursue employment. I was intimidated working with eight UNC graduate students, but by always working hard I proved my responsibility and dependability. After my friends saw that the workplace was not as scary as they assumed, many followed in my footsteps and began working. At the end of my junior year I was again faced with a situation where I felt I would have to be the first to step forward. When my peers were selecting the classes they would be taking in their final high school year, I watched as they filled their schedules with classes that would be "easy and fun". Signing up for three advanced placement courses, many people thought I was crazy; even the guidance counselors advised me to reconsider my grueling schedule. As a result of my persuasion, my friends changed their schedule from a list of classes they could sleep through to a schedule consisting of classes that would benefit their futures. Now as I am approaching my high school graduation, I am presented with a great opportunity to further my education. No one in the past three generations of my family has attended a university, and I see this as an opportunity to set an example for my younger sister and cousins. Through the past four years of my life I have learned that leadership is more than winning a club election. Leadership is shown through the bold actions taken to help those who need it, and through my actions I have led my peers by setting an…
