'Unwind, By Flannery O' Connor
Unwind is a novel based around a technological advancement that gives people a new option to deal with delinquents, overpopulation, and unwanted children. Neuro-grafting is the technology that was developed to assist individuals who have lost limbs, failed organs, tumors, or other physical and mental problems. The process of Neuro-grafting is when a child reaches the age of 13 they qualify for an "Unwinding" where they are sent to harvest camps and then taken apart so that their parts can be used for replacements. The main characters of the story are three teenagers that are scheduled to be unwound. Their stories are separate until they meet each other. He escapes the authorities on the back of a truck then reaches a highway which happens to be the same highway that Lev is being driven by his dad to the harvest camp, as well as the highway that Risa is being transported via bus to the same harvest camp. Connor takes Lev as a hostage after causing a traffic pileup which subsequently crashes the bus that Risa is on. In a series of events the three of them wind up together. They move through the woods to evade authorities and Connor gains the reputation of the Akron Awol for shooting a cop with his own stun gun. The three of them end up inside a school hiding in the girls restroom Lev takes this opportunity to run and alert the authorities due to all the brainwashing that was done to him by his family. Connor and Risa run with the aid of a Teacher who directs them to a safehouse for Runaway Unwinds. There are three other Unwinds in the safehouse when they arrive. A big tough looking guy named Roland who is going to be on of the Antagonists of the story, an asian girl named Mai with a punch of piercings, and a pretty boy named Hayden whose parents divorced and decided they'd rather see him unwound than go to one of …show more content…
Turns out it was started by Cleaver the helicopter pilot. The Admiral and Risa are trapped inside his decommissioned jet and are slowly boiling since the AC was cut off by the rioters. The Admiral passes out and Connor manages to calm the Unwinds. Cleaver is killed and Roland is tasked with flying the helicopter to the hospital with the Admiral, Risa, and Connor. They are cornered and betrayed by Roland who attempts to sell out the entire graveyard to save himself. Unfortunately the authorities already know about the Admiral and his Graveyard but have chosen to leave it be as it keeps most of the Unwinds off the streets. The four of them are sent to Happy Jack Harvest Camp. Lev just so happens to be there as well. Roland is Unwound, Connor is scheduled to be Unwound but as he is walking to the "Chop Shop"(the building where the unwinding takes place) Mai, Lev, and another blow up the Chop Shop by becoming clappers (Someone who injects explosives into their bloodstream and detonates it with a sudden impact such as clapping) Connor is saved, Lev backs out from clapping and survives, Risa also survives.
