Besides educating adolescence and adults, increasing background checks all across America will deter the rate of gun violence. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System or also known as NICS is an integrated system initiated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in which background checks were done on the potential buyer before granted the permission to purchase any sort of firearm. According to GAO (2000), “NICS provided approval responses within 30 seconds after the purchaser’s identifying information was input into the system”. Adding on to that, “NICS continues to provide centralized access to criminal history and other records such as domestic violence misdemeanors and restraining orders”. This emphasises the speed and…

The reality of the law is brought into play by the authors to lure the publics’ attention to the problem. They use facts by giving the audience unknown statistic that evokes change in mind, a technique that tries to convince the public, of the statement they are making. The writers use facts and reasons to persuade the readers into wanting to make change happen by signing the petition, which is their purpose. The text is used to inform the audience of the petition. By breaking down the petition point by point, it is a more effective way of presenting their purpose. The authors demonstrate how the act “would allow undocumented students to meet in-state tuition requirements” and “receive scholarships derived from non-state funds,” the author uses this to inform the reader the change that they are trying to persuade people to make (CDN 327). The writers name different types of financial aids that American teenagers are given like “Cal grants…students aid, and fee waivers” to let the public know of the everyday type of help for college that is withheld from those students that are here undocumented (CDN…

The article I chose talks about the issues regarding sanctuary cities. It talks about how sanctuary cities are illegal under the constitution and elected officials in sanctuary cities are breaking the law. Furthermore, it continues to speak about how undocumented immigrants have criminal records and how certain crimes could have been prevented if undocumented immigrants were deported. U.S. secretary, Jeff Sessions, wants states to enforce the new federal immigration laws because he believes that it would make the nation safer by deporting undocumented immigrants. According to Sessions, if cities don’t comply with the new federal immigration laws, cities with sanctuary cities can lose funding..…

I believe background checks remove a certain element from the problem and should be expanded to include psychological information. I believe we should consider requiring handgun safety courses and certifications before allowing individuals to carry concealed weapons into public. Safety courses for properly handling and storing weapons in homes is another requirement that I consider prudent. But at the end of the day, I think Domenech’s point is well taken. When the time comes and evil is staring at us in whatever form, only individuals standing up for justice will create a true difference. The actions of Todd Beamer and Mark Bingham on flight 93 serve as an example to all of us, that individuals cause the difference not…

    Gun Control In Australia

Most people believe an important and enforced law on background could really help, as it has worked in Australia. A study written by Jesse Singal and published by Science of Us on June 22, 2016 retrieved from : http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2016/06/what-a-new-gun-control-study-can-and-cant-tell-us-about-mass-shootings.html revealed a decline in violent acts in Australia after a passage of a gun control law resulted from a mass shooting. Two other studies, here at home, in Connecticut and Missouri, provide evidence of the effectiveness of background check regulation. President Barack Obama initiated multiple efforts including a submission in the Congress of a universal background check law. Unfortunately, the proposed law failed because of a polarized congress with a majority of republicans in the House and a relative majority in the Senate. According to The Hill, a poll suggests that 92% of gun owners support a universal background checks. It is important now to wonder why the American official cannot or do not want to make a bipartisan effort in order to pass a law on background…

The United States has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world. That also comes with having the most mass shootings even rivaling war-torn countries. In 2015 only there has been more than three hundred plus mass shootings. With more shootings happening a lot more frequently, it is apparent that not nearly enough background checks into gun owners are being run. Three-quarters of people either own two or more. But what should be done about those who are attempted buyers that are turned away? Implemented in 1998 and Created under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System allows licensed gun sellers to check with the Federal Bureau of Intelligence, as required by the law, before a sale is made. While background checks have prevented tens of thousands of unlawful gun sales each year, opponents have said that the government doesn’t prosecute enough of the attempted buyers (‘‘The Case against Gun Background Checks’’, Good). More than 76,000 denials for gun purchases in 2010. 62 people were referred for prosecution and only thirteen of said prosecutions resulted in verdicts or guilty pleas. Some feel like there are already enough gun laws and that there…

    Stricter Gun Laws Essay

Even though Americans are entitled the right to bear arms, laws need to be set in place so not only felons but mentally unstable people cannot purchase a gun. A study done at Duke and Harvard proclaimed that almost one in ten Americans have anger issues and own a gun. Many will argue that stricter gun laws are pointless because criminals don’t follow the law as it is. However, recent studies show gun violence isn’t just by labeled criminals but by everyday people who are ticking time bombs ready to explode. Studies concluded that…
