Eisenhower gives famous "domino theory" speech
President Dwight D. Eisenhower coins one of the most famous Cold War phrases when he suggests the fall of French Indochina to the communists could create a "domino" effect in Southeast Asia. The so-called "domino theory" dominated U.S. thinking about Vietnam for the next decade.
By early 1954, it was clear to many U.S. policymakers that the French were failing in their attempt to re-establish colonial control in Indochina (Vietnam), which they lost during World War II when the Japanese took control of the area. Eisenhower’s eight year presidency was riddled with United States involvement in Southeast Asia - specifically around the Indochina foreign policy. Eisenhower’s administration was truly the first administrations that was tested by the conflict in Vietnam to aid in solutions and help promote diplomacy. The war torn region of Southeast Asia had been challenged by violence for decades already to this point in history and the United States understood how critical it was to America’s strategic direction; labeling South Vietnam vital to both military position for security, and for natural resources. These are both important to have under a non-communist control, but it was even more important to insure the region of the world was not under the control of the communist regime.…

For over 6 decades the French had colonial control of Indochina . In 1954, the French suffered a critical defeat at Dien Bien Phu, the French having no options had to pull out of Vietnam. At the Geneva Conference of 1954, an agreement was met called the Geneva Accords, it stated the French would draw all military forces out of Vietnam and temporarily divide Vietnam along the 17th parallel; which spilt the country into communist North Vietnam which was supported by Russia and China and non-communist South Vietnam supported by the United States. The communist government in North Vietnam was led by Ho Chi Minh; he sought to unite Vietnam under communist rule. The United States feared the spread of communism would prove the "domino theory" which stated that if one country in Southeast Asia fell to communism then surrounding countries would also soon fall.…

It is important to keep honoring our veterans because they have sacrificed so much for this country. Also we honor them because we need to tell them how appreciative we are of their dutiful service to our country. Even the president honors our veterans. Each year the president or one of his representatives lays a wreath on The Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers in the Arlington Cemetery every Veterans Day to honor those veterans. Even though the first unknown soldier was laid to rest there on Armistice day on the year of 1921 this ceremony still continues. This is one way that shows just how important honoring our veterans…

In 1918, President Wilson established November 11 as a day to show honor and thankfulness for those who have risked their lives for our country. This day was significant because it was "The War to end all Wars,” World War I. This day was mainly set aside to show pride to our veterans of World War I. In 1938, Armistice Day, Veterans Day original name, became a legal holiday. In 1945 just after World War II ended, congress changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day was created to show pride to American Veterans of every war, with the oddity of a few years in which it was celebrated every year on a Monday, November 11th.…

Veterans Day is the day that we set aside to honor those who serve, but one day does not cover all the bloodshed. The day is not enough to show the appreciation which is due to the countless number of heroic men and woman. The American people should do more to show how much they appreciate their duty. Veterans make me be proud to be in a country were people would sacrifice themselves to keep our freedom and other rights that we take advantage of everyday.…

It is very important to keep honoring our veterans because if they didn’t fight for our country we would still be ruled by England or any other country that tried to fight us. Veterans play a big role in shaping our country and it is our job to recognize that. It takes a lot of tears and heartbreak to end a war, like WWI that ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and those who survived and died are worthy of the recognition. If you have never talked to a veteran about their experiences in war, try it sometime and you might see how valuable they were in the making of the U.S. I think that it was smart that Dwight D. Eisenhower changed it from Armistice Day to Veterans Day because like I said it is very important to keep…

Veterans were sent to other countries that they knew nothing about and had to learn so many new things. Since they are usually there for a long period of time, they had to learn the ways of those countries. They have sacrificed months to years at a time without seeing their children or families. For most Americans, we honor our veterans because they served us to be free and without them we wouldn't be free in our country. But why? Why do we honor our veterans years after they're done serving. We need to honor them because they fought and worked hard for friends, family, and country. To me, if we don't honor our veterans it would be heartbreaking to the veterans that made our country free. Also, since we are free we can have our own beliefs and not believe in something that someone else does, and have our own rights so we can do what we want to do. Thank you to all veterans that served for our country so we can be free.…

What Memorial Day means to me. When I think of Memorial Day I think of the soldiers I think of the way that these heroes get out of bed each day, and walk to the battlefield to defend our country. Memorial Day is not just a day to respect our current and past veterans, but a day to remember the fallen veterans. Also I think of the heart of a soldier which is like the size of the Titanic, and twice as big, and the soul of a soldier which is free and peaceful. If only the world was free and peaceful.…
