Cheryl Foster “Video Games Can Be Helpful to College Students” In the article, “Video Games Can Be Helpful to College Students,” by Scott Carlson, he discusses a study that examined the effect of video games on college students. The report he says, “suggests that video games are a vital and positive part of college students social lives, even though games may be keeping them from their studies. I believe that this can be true because there seems to be several helpful effects such as refining brain function, lowering stress and depression in life, and improving decision-making skills. One of the reasons why video games can be a great thing is because these games might affect your brain in a substantial way. It seems that it could improve a person’s life skills, have greater speed with tasks, and even help us recall things better. Many people consider video games bad however no one is realizing the greater effects it could have for children and even adults. I think instead of our society being judgmental of it, they should look and research how these games might actually better ourselves for the future. I have found that another reason is that it can lower stress and depression in your life. College can definitely create stress in a student’s life. It can become overwhelming and schoolwork can interfere with things you have to deal with outside of school such as having a job. To eliminate those things off their minds, they resort to video games to help reduce it. As Carlson stated, “However in a somewhat contradictory finding, two-thirds of the students said video games had no effect on their college performance. The researchers noted that the amount of time spent studying closely matched the results of other surveys.” (pg. 139) I find this fascinating because I am thinking maybe the video games get them motivated to do their schoolwork. They are becoming driven to use their improved skills from the video
