Playing video games has become one of the largest activities people have invested their time in in today’s society. Most people would rather sit inside and play a video game instead of going outside to play or do something productive. People do not realize how much playing video games can effect ones brain and the actions they take throughout their daily lives. There are both positive and negative effects to gaming depending on which game a person is playing. Age can also affect ones brain function and how it reacts during a certain stages in life. Video games have different effects on younger kids versus college students and adults. Students who are addicted to video games have a negative effect on their school work. Video games not only have negative effects but there are also many ways they can affect the brain positively.
Negative Effects of Video Games
A kid is more likely to be aggressive towards people if he or she were playing Grand Theft Auto or a game that is violent that involves shooting or killing a person (University of Rocheste para. 1). When a kid is playing a violent game it makes them more familiar with hitting, shooting or stealing a car which makes the kid feel like he or she is in a real life situation (University of Rocheste para. 2). These games can make a person act differently when it comes to real life situations such as a person reacting very emotionally to a cause or being more aggressive. Violent video games like this can influence bad or psychotic behavior for example what happened in Colorado. A kid with orange dyed hair decided to enter a movie theater and kill several people with no intention. Little do people know the reason could be violent video games. Researchers have done an experiment to prove that video games can corrupt a person’s mind:
Around 300 gamers were surveyed on how a person would react to real world experiences. They determined post and pre feelings to the gamers had an inability to master a game and its controls

I know all of our parents at one point or another have told us to stop playing video games because it will rot your brain. Is that really the case though?     This training could be through the use of video games. This study uses the video game, Space Fortress (SF), with cognitive tasks components to support the hypothesis. SF was created as a tool for studying training strategies and learning, in which the players are required to focus attention on several overlapping tasks that represent real-world situations and tasks. This study includes both the continuous and discrete, the event-related, aspects of the game. The brain activity of the effects of playing SF were measured using an electroencephalogram (EEG) before and after the game. The event-related brain potential (ERP) and event-related spectral perturbations (ERSP) were two analyses used to analyze the brain activity associated with the discrete task events. This study involved 39 participants, who reported playing less than 3 hours of video games a week in the past 2 years, were right-handed, and had normal to corrected-to-normal vision. Before the experiment, the participants watched two short movies that explained the details and the most important rules of the game. After the movies, the participants were asked to familiarize themselves with SF, and then had a pre-training EEG session. Participants were to practice the game for 20 hours and return for their post-training EEG session. During the EEG training sessions, participants were to perform auditory oddball task without the game, and then to perform the auditory oddball task with the then 3-minutes-long games.
