nswer as many of the following questions as you can:

What was the most valuable part of the readings and study material for you this week?

After watching the YouTube video “Taking Root the Vision of Wangari Maathai” and going through the Maathai readings, it made me realise how much I have to be grateful for. She started the Green Belt Movement to create awareness of their culture and the environment around them. She also created the metaphor “The Wrong Bus syndrome”. It makes me think about my own life and if I am truly happy with

Even if the odds are against you, you should not give up, you must try your best and believe in yourself (and then maybe even encourage others to lend a hand!) - “I am doing the best I can, and that to me is what all of us should do” (Maathai, 2011).

How did it make you think differently about life?

Maathai’s, Taking View the Root video made me think about what I have and what I should be thankful for. Those women grew up in poverty and was seen as inferior to men. This made it very difficult to make something of yourself since you have to fight for it. I had the privilege of growing up in a home where there were no financial issues- everything was made easy since I just got everything that I asked for. I grew up in a non-sexist country so there is no need to fight for anything I want to do since I do not have to prove myself to anyone (men). I took everything for granted and stopped appreciating things that came my way. I see now that there are so many people across the world that are grateful for receiving one meal a day, where I just go to the closest take away restaurant and I am sorted. I must thank God each day for what I have, I must not take it for granted. Who knows, anything could happen- tomorrow I could wake up with nothing. What

In my life I have overcome obstacles and shown persistence as well. There was a time when my determination stuck out the most. It was the high school county cross country meet. As a freshman I ran junior varsity, and was excited to know I would be leading the race. Once the gun went off I was not surprised to see only the trail and the bike before me. The race was going well but in the second mile it took a turn for the worst. A coach from a rival team pointed me in the wrong direction, and I led the top runners with me. Once I realized what had happened and that I was no longer in first place, I felt defeated. Others around me collapsed and dropped out of the race. My persistence kept me going. Emotionally and physically drained from the extra mile, I finished in 50th place. But I did not give up and I made…
