High were so scared and as nervous as can be, but Melba never let anyone see how scared she actually was. Some people even believe that not reacting at all to conflicts is the best way, they enjoy just being neutral in the situation. Needless to say, numberless arguments can be made against positivity, but whether people believe it makes it true or not. Anne Frank was a considerably happy person throughout, hiding, and she tried her best to make it as fun as possible. Starting out, Anne was happy because she was able to decorate her room with her posters. “Thanks to father-who brought my entire postcard and movie-star collection here beforehand and a brush and a pot of glue… it looks much more cheerful.” (Goodrich & Hackett ). Anne’s father had brought Anne all of her posters to help her feel a bit more at home. Even during their Hanukkah celebration Anne was full of spirit, even in her tough condition. Anne shouts, “Presents!” after everyone was being all sad about not having a true celebration of the holiday (Goodrich & Hackett 481). Anne herself didn’t receive a present but she was still overjoyed to see the reactions of the others receiving the presents she had gotten for them. Her father at the end of the play was telling Miep that she enjoyed the camps. “Anne was happy in the camp in Holland… she could be out in the sunshine and fresh air.” (Goodrich & Hackett 511). She enjoyed finally being able to run around, feel the sunlight on her skin, and not having to whisper or be quiet. Even though Anne’s happy persona didn’t get her life saved, her time inside the Annex was way more fun and enjoyable than if she had gone through it acting like the Van Daans. In Warriors Don't Cry, Melba went through a very tough time dealing with the transition into desegregating Central High, but she never let the bullies get in her way.
Her first day at Central High was turning out to be a disaster and it hadn’t even started, but she still kept her head high and continued acting as if everything was ok."I squared my shoulders and tried to remember what Grandma had said:’God loves you child; no matter what, he sees you as his precious idea’" this was the way that Melba could cope with the racist slur that was spit at her but she didn’t react (jpel). Melba was being terribly disrespected in one of the classrooms that she was in, but she remembered she couldn't do anything about it and she had definitely not wanted him to see that he had gotten a reaction out of her.Melba had tried her best to have the most normal teenage lifestyle as life would let her have. “Please, God, let me learn how to stop being a warrior. Sometimes I just need to be a girl.” this is the quote that Melba writes in her diary after her sweet sixteen is less than sweet (SparkNotes Editors). She constantly was studying, working to get her driver's license, she had a boyfriend as well, hung out with her friends and did her best with situations at school. Melba’s grandmother had a very considerable impact on how Melba reacted to things.“God’s warriors don’t cry.” “ ‘Change the rules of the game, girl, and they might not like it so much.’ ‘They’d think I was crazy.’ ‘They’d …show more content…
think you were no longer their victim.’ “ these are things that Melba’s grandmother says to her to help her out and Melba took every word to heart (Sparknotes editors). Having a strong bond with people in r life and family can help out during a struggle. Melba was so strong in her time of hardships, and she ended up doing great things after her years at Central High. There are various studies that can prove positive thinking is the best way to resolve a conflict.
A study done by Professor Barbara Fredrickson proves that positive thinking is better for bodies and minds. Fredrickson states, “Positive emotions expand our awareness, our ability to take in more and to see the bigger picture is facilitated.” (Malcolm). Here, she’s basically saying that if positivity is used then more minds will be open to suggestions and will see even more opportunities. A positive mindset can help physical health as well. “Having more moments of that open mindset helps us connect with others and it helps us build our resilience and our physical health because we become more energetic.” (Malcolm). Fredrickson is telling us that negative thinking causes bodies to have less energy and makes people moody which is never satisfying. When a positive attitude is used, it can be easy to notice by others and they can then tell if someone is approachable. “With positive emotions, there is more of an easiness in the torso and I think that’s consequently because other people can pick up and let others know that you’re safe to approach.”(Malcolm). Being visibly kind and approachable makes others want to be kind back and could possibly make them think positively as well. Positive thinking is a major factor of mental health and can directly affect multiple things in
life. Positive thinking is the best possible way to deal with conflicts. Anne made sure that she had a favorable life and a great time no matter what she went through, and Melba never wanted to let her grandmother down and didn’t want to let the white guy see her cry. Mental health is something to definitely take into consideration as well. After all, positive thinking and attitude is the most rewarding way to deal with a conflict because much more comes out of it than with negativity.
