James I had many questions asked about his ability and potential to be King of England. He had many critics saying that the only reason he was King, was as he was the only one in line to the throne and his ability as a King was not good enough to deserved the throne. There were many views about him at this point of time and this was one of many. This may have been due to his mix repertoire as King of Scotland. In this essay, I will debate whether I believe James was a suitable candidate to become the King of England.
One critical thought of James was the fact that he was the only bloodline and therefore heir to the throne and this was the main reason to why he became King. This resulted in lack of competition to become King as any other opposition to challenge for king was overthrown by the bloodline to Elizabeth. This caused concern for many of the people of England as they believed he would lack the ability to be King. James’ mixed abilities in Scotland were a cause for concern as lots of his decisions were made by others as he was appointed at an early age.
Also, James never really had full, dominant control of Scotland, as parts of Scotland were deemed uncontrollable. He was announced King at the age of thirteen months, which clearly is too young for anyone to be make decisions, requiring heavy thought and thinking for his country. At this early age he had already experienced many deaths close to him as David Rizzio(a romantic partner of his mum) had been stabbed fifty two times and also his dad strangled after arguments between Mary Queen of Scots(his mum) and his father, Lord Darnley. His mother was exiled from Scotland after being captured during battle. This would have been very traumatising at such an early age. Early into his reign many of his Lord Protectors
