Special methods of communication are methods that are used to help a service user with specific language needs to communicate. These methods are non-written and non-verbal communication for service users that suffer from impairments which can cause then to communicate effectively (Classroom Notes, 2014)
The first special method is British Sign Language (BSL) which is a method of communication that is used to communicate with service users who have a hearing impairment. BSL can be used in GP surgeries for a patient that has a hearing impairment and cannot understand verbal communication so that the GP can convey the diagnosis of the patient to them and to explain what type of treatment the patient will get for that to ensure that the patient understands but also that they are understood as well. It is important that different settings can communicate using sign language because it allows service users with speech impairments and hearing impairment to communicate and therefore promotes effective communications since it empowers patients and works to uphold the Care value base as it is a part of the Anti-discrimination practice.
