What Are The Difficulties In The Lamb Of The Slaughter
The story Lamb of The Slaughter was written by Roald Dahl, he published the book September 1953. In his book there was 2 main characters Patrick (the husband) and Mary (the pregnant wife). Dahl started the story off telling us that they are a great couple but as we got further into the story we see that there are some difficulties.
In the beginning of the story it shows us that Mary was waiting for her Patrick to come home from a long day of work, she glanced at the clock almost every minute. When she finally heard the tires come upon the stones outside she waited in her chair patiently waiting for him to come in. When he came in the house she said “ Hello Darling,” as he replied with a “Hello” (1) she took off his coat and hung it up. He

She didn’t see anything coming her way when that happen. She was nervous when he said “Listen, i got something to tell you.” she replied to him with a “What is it darling?” What’s the matter? (2) Then he became absolutely motionless, and he kept his head down. He started talking and he said "This is going to be a bit of a shock to you, I'm afraid," he said. "But I've thought about it a good deal and I've decided the only thing to do is tell you immediately.” (2) It didn’t tell us what he said in the story but when you think about it you can see that he was leaving her and she didn’t like that. When he told her she sat there and acted like she didn’t hear her. “I’ll fix supper.” (2) she whispered. As she was walking across the room she couldn’t feel her feet touching the floor. She did everything without thinking, she went downstairs and took a hold of the first object she found. She took it out and ;looked at ut, it was wrapped in paper, it was a leg of a lamb. She took it upstairs she saw him standing by the window with his back towards her.”I’ve already told you” he said, “Don’t make me supper, I'm going out.” (2) At that time she didn’t know how to take control of her actions, she walked up to him, she swung the frozen leg in the air and brung it down hard as she could on the back of his head. She stood there waiting for at least four or five seconds, then he crashed to the floor. My analysis is that …show more content…
The policeman was a friend of Patrick, so they was friends as well. The officer was feeling sad for her because she lost her husband. Mary forgot that she had the leg of the lamb in the oven so the officer reminded her that it was in there, she got up and went to get the food out the oven. When she came back she offered the officer something to drink, he didn’t think that it would be a good idea but he got one anyways, they talked for awhile, and she offered him something to eat. She went to get him some of the leg of the lamb. He was talking to her about the murder weapon about how if he was killed there the weapon could be somewhere around the house outside, but he didn’t know that what he was eating was the murder weapon. He stopped eating and she said, “Do me a favor and eat it all up for me” (4) , and that’s what he did was eat it. So the whole time he didn’t know what the murder weapon was, but the whole time he was eating it, and he didn’t know. So this story was a interesting story and it was based on a murder that no one knew

"Lamb to the Slaughter" is told from the point of view of Mary Maloney. This choice to tell the story from the point of view of the murderer is an interesting choice and one that largely defines this story. The reader knows only what she knows. At times, such as the end of the story, this means that the reader knows more than the other characters, especially in relation to the leg of lamb. On the other hand, the reader is not given access to the reasoning behind Patrick’s decision to leave. This makes it far easier for the reader to be on Mary’s side when she makes questionable decisions.…

In “Lamb to the Slaughter,” the beginning of the short story expresses how Mary Maloney, the main character and wife to Patrick Maloney, is six months pregnant. The author of “Lamb to the Slaughter,” Roald Dahl, greatly expresses Mary’s deep love for her husband in the exposition of the short story, but despite Mary’s immense love for her husband, Patrick Maloney, he has the desire to leave her. Dahl never specifically states Patrick’s reasoning for wanting to leave Mary, so the readers try to use context clues within the story to figure out why Patrick wants to leave Mary. While reading the story, the reason why Patrick plans to leave Mary can vary. Although there the possibilities can vary, a good majority of the evidence in the text points…

Mary Maloney’s cleverness is shown when she convinces the police officers to believe she was not home at the time of the murder, when she cries in the in front of police officers and when she calls police officer for help whom knows her. After Mary Maloney kills her husband with the leg of lamb she then puts it into the oven to cook and goes to the groceries, "She told how she'd put the meat in the oven-'it's there now, cooking'- and how she'd slopped out to the grocer for vegetables" (Dahl 6). Mary quickly goes to the grocery store to make it seem as if she were not home, and so when the police officers came and asked questions it would be true that she really did go to the grocers and did not lie also hiding the murder weapon. These actions display Mary’s cleverness on how she can get away with murder and hide the murder weapon without being caught. The second instance Mary displays her cleverness is when Mary came home from the grocers and pretended to cry after seeing her husband dead, "she ran over to him, knelt down beside him, and began to cry her heart out." (Dahl 5). Mary had cried at the scene of the crime making it look like as if it was a surprise to her and she was sad even though she…

The surprising contrasts that Dahl uses throughout the story keep the reader interested in the plot. Dahl builds up images from what different characters say, think and act. These images are then quickly shattered, making the whole story very ironic. It is ironic that Patrick is killed by his dinner, and when the policemen are discussing the murder weapon and say, "Probably right under our very noses". When in fact the murder weapon is under their noses and they are eating it and doing so, they get rid of any evidence that may lead…
