Intro:
In this assessment I will be explaining to you what caused the English civil war in 1642 and the main reasons why it happened. I will be writing the causes related to these three factors: Money, religion, power.
Money:
The first cause of the war related to money, was at 1629 when Charles ordered that everyone in the country should pay Ship Money and the people who refused to pay were arrested. This helped cause the civil war because many people were angry with this, so they refused to pay the tax. This made Charles unpopular.
Religion:
The first cause related to religion, was at 1625 when King Charles I married Henrietta Maria, daughter of Henry IV of France at St Augustine's Church, Canterbury, Kent. The marriage was not popular because she was a Catholic and people thought that King Charles was going to reintroduce Catholicism.
The second cause related to religion, was at 1637. Prynne, Burton and Bastwick were tortured and released a few years later. They were seen as a puritan martyrs. This increased the chances of war because Charles was being harsh on their punishments.
The third cause related to religion, was in 1637 when Charles demanded that the new English Prayer Book be used in Scottish Churches. This was a big mistake because the Scots were more anti Catholic than the English and many of them were Puritan. This was going to increase the chances of war a big amount. There were riots in Scotland against the new book and Charles was forced to raise an army to fight against the Scots. The English army was defeated by the Scots.
Power:
The first cause related to power/religion, was in 1625 when he made a speech that he’d been chosen by god and so it was the duty of parliament to obey him. That meant no one could argue with him otherwise they would arguing with god.
The second cause related to power, was in 1625 when the king refused to punish Buckingham and imprisoned some mp’s.
