What Does A Gaffer Do On A Film Setting
I think that the members of the technical crew are mainly technical, executing what the Director of Photography tells them to do and the Director's vision. However, the D.O.P. definitely has the most creative freedom out of all of the roles, in my opinion. As cinematography is their passion, they know what looks good on camera and can be innovative in what they shoot (of course, if the director says that it is okay) to make different shots unique and creative. In addition, sometimes the Gaffer and Sound Mixer can be creative for the film's benefit. Last semester, I worked on a film set in which I witnessed the Director, Gaffer, and Sound Mixer working together to solve problems on set. The Gaffer and Sound Mixer would give suggestions on the placement/coloring of the lights or different sounds to capture. Even though the Director's vision and creativity are the most important, the Gaffer and Sound Mixer do have a bit of room to be creative in order to help the shoot. …show more content…
When reading the article, What Does a Gaffer Do on a Film Set?, Alison Cooper states that "the gaffer's job is definitely a technical and administrative one, but depending on the DP's working style and their relationship, the gaffer can also have some creative freedom with the lighting and lighting
