As The World Falls Down David Bowie's “As The World Falls Down”, a bittersweet love story of a man trying to convince his significant other to give him a chance. Failed love is a common theme in songs, but the significance of this song is the aftermath of one scorned by love's embrace. Through the use of metaphor and personification, Bowie shows us the inner and outer conflicts of one burned by the heat that is love. So what makes someone want to try again at love, especially when everything they know is falling apart? It is unsure who this song is about, as Bowie was very open about his Bisexuality, although in the movie The Labyrinth, where the song originates from, it is sung to a woman, so it is safe to assume that this song is dedicated to her. The her, it's the weight of the world falling on top of her. She’s clearly hurt in the song, “As the pain sweeps through, it makes no sense to you, Every thrill is gone, wasn’t too much fun at all”. She seems to have an internal and external conflict at this point in the song; Her inner feeling gor Bowie and the one who scorned her, and her external attitude towards love itself.

Through this use of metaphor, he expresses that this girl clearly has beautiful, yet sad eyes. He even makes a reference to the 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life”, as he promises to “place the moon within your heart”. Bowie also give this girls eyes, heart, and love human traits, such as calling her heart “fooled” and her love “sad”.
