What Is High Scope Approach
Highscope Developed in Michigan in the 1960s the high scope philosophy was focused on child development. The high scope approach was based on the work of Paget and Dewey. Educators were seen as facilitators or partners rather than managers or supervisors. The high scope approach was developed by a man Called David Weikart, it was developed for children who live in poorer areas and perform poorly on standardised tests. He looked for a better teaching method and came up with the high scope approach. This approach was all based around planning, doing and reviewing. It differed from traditional nurseries and looked at how children develop. The high scope approach is based on science and language development, it says children learn best when they have hands on experience. Having reviews after they have learnt gives them a richer understanding of the activities and helps to promote the correct language. It has been researched, shaped and developed over a forty year period. It identifies and builds on children's strengths, interests and abilities. This curriculum is used internationally in crèches, playgroups, preschools, nurseries and primary schools. Children construct their own learning by doing and being involved in working with materials people and ideas. High scope provides children with a consistent daily routine, an opportunity to carry out activities, an opportunity to choose plan and carryout reflection on their activities and opportunities for children to engage in the active participatory learning process.     This helps to encourage independent and active learning getting the children involved when practitioners are planning, carrying out and reviewing activities.     4.1- The way in which my own working practice can affect children and young person development is by working closely with a child to watch them play, listen observe what they are doing write down what you see. Through careful observation you will begin to know your key child, think about what they like doing and what they don’t like doing. Speak to parents and gain information and advice. Once you have taken photos and observations on a child we will then look at the curriculum EYFS and look where the child ages is and what they are and aren’t doing. If a child is struggling to do something we will make simple next steps which link with the eyfs and we will encourage and support the child and put out appropriate toys and materials to help achieve this. The key worker will work together closely with the child and family to achieve the best from their sessions at nursery. Once we c a child’s next step during our weekly planning we will then plan for our own individual key children and plan what there next step is and spend 15 minutes with your key child to help them and encourage to achieve that next step.     The HighScope Curriculum differs from other early childhood programs because it has a daily plan-do-review sequence and because the curriculum is content, the social, intellectual, and physical building blocks that essential to young children’s optimal growth.
