He focused his early research on the soybean and how to help advance medicines like progesterone. During his career, he was often underestimated because of his skin color. Yet, Julian was a force to be reckoned with. He found a way to convert stigmasterol, once taken from a calabar bean, into progesterone. One of his biggest achievements was finding a way to advance the production of cortisone, which helped aid people with rheumatoid arthritis. He, his wife and his two children moved to a small, majority-white town called Oak Park. The town was not pleased with the idea of a black family moving into their neighborhood, so they decided to show it. One night, when no one was home, the Julian home was used for an attempted arson. Thankfully, the front door blocked the ignited rope from reaching gasoline poured on the inside of the house, so they were able to stay in their home. Although this could have had very bad consequences, the Julians refused to move from their home. The next attack was on a night when Percy Julian and his wife were out, and an explosive was thrown at their window. It missed, but blew a hole in the ground. Instead of leaving, the bomb was seen as just another fork in the road. Thankfully, the majority of the town did not feel the same way about the Julians as the people who acted with violence did.
