Zipporah’s quote describes it perfectly. A human doing. Doing all they can to make an impact. Change the world’s perspective. Danielle Hernandez, a senior at Iowa State, is definitely one of those kinds of people. Dedicating her life to helping others, Danielle constantly makes a difference and touches the lives of everyone she meets. So what is it that makes Danielle a hero? “The Psychology of Heroism” by Kendra Cherry held the answer. This article states that “heroes tend to have eight traits, which we call The Great Eight. These traits are smart, strong, resilient, selfless, caring, charismatic, reliable, and inspiring.” Danielle fills almost all of these requirements. Upon asking a close friend, Lu Lawrence, why she volunteers, I was told, “[Her volunteer work] just pushes her harder everyday. It’s something she’s really passionate about, and it really shows itself through her everyday life”. But Danielle’s volunteering is not like any other kind you would see. Danielle draws caricatures, which are basically over exaggerated portraits. Danielle goes to nursing homes and schools and draws caricatures for them for free. For example, she drew in Audubon, Iowa, at a nursing home called the Friendship Home. She drew many different people, but one that particularly stood out in her memories was an old woman with alzheimers. Her and her husband got a caricature drawn, and burst into tears after seeing it.
