In the 1750s, I was still not an American because the North America was colonized by Spain, France, and Britain. The three countries could not get on well with one another because they all wanted to occupy more lands of North America. The root cause of the French and Indian War were about the control of the Ohio region. In the late 1740s and early 1750s, the French sent an expedition down the Ohio River and claimed that the Ohio region belong to Louis XV. The French also built lots of forts in the area to claim their sovereignty. The most direct cause was economic conflict between colonists and local Americans. Before the end of the French and Indian War, the Britain’s policy toward North America was called “Salutary Neglect”. The British government paid little attention to the development of me and my brothers living in the colonies and did not establish any acts to regulate our behaviors. The negligence allowed many wealthy and powerful English Americans to rise in the colonies. However, after the war, the British government began to take active measures to manage us. The French and Indian War was expensive and left a large debt for the British and they wanted to generate revenue from us in order to pay the debt. For example, the Navigation Acts were first established to regulate the trade and travel of English Americans. The Sugar and Molasses Act was passed in 1764 and it put on duty on molasses and sugar entering the colonies. We were unhappy with the enforcement and taxation, but the British government did not stop their acts. Then the Britain thought that Americans should raise money for the defense. The Revenue Act was passed and it put a tax on foreign imported goods. In order to express our dissatisfaction and anger, we used boycotts to oppose the act and many other acts in the following years. In 1777, the British army made a thoughtful plan to cut the relationship between New England and other states. Three British general led different troops from three different directions. However, General Howe did not follow the plan because he spent some time with his mistress. As a result, he and the soldiers were defeated by yellow fever and they failed to provide any aid for General Burgoyne. General Burgoyne led his troops to Saratoga where they were attacked and beaten by our brave soldiers and minutemen on October 17. Burgoyne agreed to surrender and went back to the Britain. The battle of Saratoga was important because it was the turning point of the war and laid foundation for the final victory of Americans. After hearing the victory of Americans in the battle, France decided to enter the war and signed a treaty with our nation. In the following battles, France provided lots of war materials for the United States, which helped us achieve the final victory and become an independent
