The book, finding fish, is a poignant autobiography of the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher, an African American boy who suffered a tumultuous childhood in a foster care setting. He was born on 8-3-1959 in a Cleveland prison to Eva Mae Fisher. She was incarcerated for the shooting death of his father, her boyfriend at the time, Eddie Elkins. Initially, he spent his first few weeks of his life in a Cleveland orphanage. Then he was fostered by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Nellie Strange. She lovingly cared for him for two years. One 10-11-1961 he was placed in the foster home of the Reverend and Mrs. Pickett, an African American couple who came from southern black heritage. Mr. Pickett was a kind man with a doctorate in medicine and his wife, the abuser, was the matriarch of the family. For the next eighteen years of Antwone’s life, he would suffer terrible physical, verbal and emotional abuse in this home, even though he would have a total of thirteen social workers “monitoring” his case. In the Pickett’s home, Antwone had three foster siblings; Flo, Dwight and Keith. Antwone suffers so much chronic abuse that he never feels confident enough to tell any of his social workers about his abuse. He is even sexually abused by Willenda, a babysitter who cares for the children at times. Antwone is finally kicked out of the home around his sixteenth birthday and he finds himself at George Junior Republic, a reform school for boys. Even though he isn’t a trouble maker, he loves being there because he finds teachers who really mentor him. While he lives there, he is able to take tests and graduate early from high school. Unfortunately now he has “graduated’ from the foster care system since he is eighteen and he is forced to become homeless and sell drugs for money. The experiment was conducted by making puppets and showing a mirror image to the the fish; then we could record how fish responded to the stimuli. The hypothesis was supported by the experiment, and our group concluded that a fish feels his zone is being invaded when being tailed around by a mirror model puppet.…
My favorite animals are Dolphins and whales and it is because of that love that this photo caught my eye the most. Ever since I was a little girl I loved the ocean and I wanted to be a marine biologist so I could work closely with those beautiful animals. The artworks I tend to be attracted to are that of dolphins and whales and of oceanic scenery. To look at the photograph of the humpback whale, captured in his natural habitat, it looks like a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The whale was beautifully captured in action during his swim. I feel the light that is shining through the ocean surface is illuminating the whale in his dive because around the whale, on the edges, are dark and black; only the whale is brightly shining. Then I looked into the whales’ eye and I felt a kind of loneliness and it looked like the whale was sad. I do not know if there were other whales with him but in his eye it looked like he was sad and lonely and wanted a friend. Wayne Levin’s “diving Humpback Whale” photograph, and his other works, gives us a look into their world and I feel that the black and white genre gave a more detailed look of the whale. Tan used an experience in her life and developed a story that built upon a specific message before quickly diverting to a completely different conclusion. Being exposed to different kinds of poetry from childhood, I grew fond of it though now I prefer fictional prose to poetry. As a profoundly sensuous form of creative writing, poetry both challenges my mind and conquers my aesthetic sense with its subtle wording. But specifically because it is a thought provoking and demanding form of writing I do not read poetry often. Therefore, the variety of topics, styles and forms of poems collected in Alehouse Journal 2011 disoriented me completely. Big Fish is a film of Tim Burton in 2003. It is a fantastic film focusing on the relationship between a father, Edward Bloom and his son, William Bloom. The main storyline is talking about the life of Edward. Edward tells his life to William as if his life is a fairy tales which is full of magical characters and experience. However, William thinks that his father is just keeping telling lies and always brags to him. William wants the truth of his father’s life but Edward insists on that he is a storyteller who is to tell interesting story, while the truth is never important. Being able to visualize the beautiful photos is amazing. The pictures of the different animals and their underwater world is great to see. “Take This Fish and Look at it*” by Samuel H. Scudder is the most compelling essay for this week’s reading assignment because the author wrote in an organized, laughable tone; therefore, allowing its audience to perceive the lesson as the professor intended it to be learned. Likewise, Scudder used three different apparent modes in his essay, these include: comparison / contrast, narrative, and description. I particularly liked this essay because it relates to the great significance that in every scenario, even writing, that things can be overlooked and need to be re-examined to find better, more sufficient details. Conceptually there are a variety of ideas I would like to explore in relation to sea animals in order to express the beauty beneath nature. When I encounter the natural environment I aim to glance past the negativity such as pollution, poverty, over population and natural disasters but focus on the hidden beauties of our planet which are usually forgotten yet destroyed. The society we live in is fixated on artificial things, everywhere we look, we see man made machines and gadgets. In a world that has been consumed by electronics and artificial things we can often forget to take the time to appreciate the natural environment which surrounds us. As a society we depend on our eyes, we don’t use our mind’s eye to view things. In reality we are limited to what we can see and what is displayed in the media. Why live in this world where we are limited, when we can create our own world full of possibilities. Every time an oil spill into the ocean, every time we cut down trees, let us not forget we are destroying the most cherished inheritance we can leave behind for our future generation.
