Two years after I arrived in the United States, a good friend of mine, Andres Garcia, became the valedictorian of the 2011 class. Despite the heavy workload, it does not pay very well. My father is helping me pay for college, and even though my parents support me anyway they can, I know they both make big sacrifices so I can have the opportunity to attend college and receive an education.
I have spent entire summers working with my dad in fields, moving irrigation lines. I have a lot of respect for what my dad does to support my family. Even though it is hard work, I don’t see this as a reason for why I want to get an education. My dad’s plan was to take me into the fields to help him, but what he ended up doing was teaching me to appreciate the hard work he does so I can get an education. These are some reasons why I am proud to be the first person in my family to attend college, even though at the same time I feel the pressure to be successful. That is why I need to continue my education. I need to show my parents that all the sacrifices they’ve made have been worth it so that they are proud of me. I continue to believe that if you work hard you can succeed, and at the end of the day, it will pay
