Imagery and symbolism is often used in poems to increase the readers understanding by creating a vivid and very visual image for the readers. One type of imagery the author used was a metaphor. In line 6 the poem states "peppermint wind". This is a great example of metaphor as the poet is comparing peppermint with wind to create an image in the readers mind. This created an image of a cool wind as peppermint as usually related to cool. The wind itself was not peppermint but was cool like it creating a vivid image and adding to the poem effectiveness. In the first stanza the poet was depicting the end of the sidewalk as a really calm place and this metaphor helped him add to the depiction further helping the reader understand the situation. Moving on an example of symbolism the poet used in the poem was in line 5 where the poet states “there the moon bird rests from his flight" This symbol was also used to create an image to help depict how the end of the sidewalk is a place because a nest symbolizes a home.
