I started working in pharmacy at nineteen years old. At that point, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do as far as a career. I started out in the production area of the pharmacy filling hundreds of medications a day a long with customer service. Two years later, after my son was born premature with some health issues, full-time work or school was not an option. I started at another pharmaceutical company after my son turned a year old. I worked in the data entry department for one year. I soon realized everyone was sitting in the same desk they started out in. How was I going to get out of that desk? After I had my daughter, post partum fell upon me quickly as I returned to work. I resigned from my position and took a few months off to recover and started looking for work months after. I soon found that phlebotomy was the…
Devastating situations were occurring back to back in my life. Things had gotten so bad that I began questioning my faith in God. I was seriously at a crossroad. This slightly put a strain on our relationship, which led me to not be as close to God as I was previously. I had stopped going to church, I barely prayed at night, and when unfortunate circumstances kept appearing; that diminished my faith even more. I saw my life spiraling out of control and I honestly did not know what to do about it. Therefore, I did the only thing that I grew up doing… I prayed.…

Whether you’re young or old, it is almost guaranteed that at least one person has made an impact on your life. Whether the impact was big or small, long term, or short term, someone has influenced your life in one way or another. However, impacts are not only made by people, but by events that have occurred in your life. Throughout one’s life multiple people and events will shape who you were, are, and will become.…
I sometimes wonder where I would be today if I hadn't had the learning experiences that I have been through in my life. No matter what the situation, I have tried to make the right decisions, by doing what is right for me, or my family. The toughest experience I went through, that caused me to learn something about myself was in December of '07. I lost my job in November. My fiancé is a construction worker who had very little work. By the middle of December all of our bills were past due by three months or more. On top of everything else, we were being evicted from our house. My fiancé, I, and our three children had nowhere…
No one is exempt from turmoil during their lives, and I can honestly say that I am thankful for the adversities and challenges which have crossed my path because they have strengthened my character and brought forth certain virtues I might otherwise never have known. There are various personal issues with which I have struggled and I have no doubt as to where their foundations lie. At a very early age I was taken away from my parents and brothers and put into foster care. It wasn’t until I was four (4) that I was finally and thankfully adopted. When my parents adopted me I had not even learned to walk. Later on in life my first husband had an affair with my best friend from high school during our marriage leaving me to divorce with a disabled child at a young age who is now gone. Over 20 years later I remarried but when I was recalled back to active duty (Navy Reserves), he went back to his parents house in Florida, and sure enough, he gave away my puppies and moved in with a woman he met at work while we were still married and I deployed to Afghanistan, leaving me to divorce again but now older. I have on occasion found myself challenged to the maximum of my capabilities because of my high academic aspirations, my extra curricular activities, my volunteer work at the American Legion in Gaston County, my love for writing poetry, and both my full-time job and my military career. But my strong belief…
I didn’t know what to do and it was heartbreaking because I end up losing my house and I was on unemployment for nine months. I end up losing my car as well because I couldn’t afford the payments. I was very upset about everything that was going on but I was more determined, than ever. I found a job but didn’t no longer have the personal transportation to get there so I used public transportation. This was something that I wasn’t use to but I knew in order for me to keep my job, I had to result in using public transportation. I’m not making a thousand dollars a week anymore like I use too but I am very proud of myself, for trying to survive and having the dedication and determination to stand strong and not allow recent downfalls to deter me from being able to have a career again and starting…
My mother kept her rental property and worked hard to give her children a good life, but adversity soon visited my life again. When I was in the sixth grade my mother lost her rental property and her hours at work dramatically slowed down. Things were slowly but surely changing. This is when I started to let adversity get the best of me. In school I always was talkative and got in a little trouble from time to time, but I knew when to stop. I was developing a nasty ‘’ I do not care’’ attitude, authority did not mean as much as it used to. I gradually started getting into more and more trouble. My behavior put more unneeded stress on my mother. It would have been easy to just blame my behavior on the lost of my father, but over time, I realized that the world does not stop for anyone. There are just some things you have to learn from and then move on. I believe God put all these circumstances in my life for a reason. He blessed my mother with a better job, and he also changed me. I started to understand what responsibility is. He blessed me to go to a high school where I could learn more about him. If I did not attend my high school I probably would not see the blessing in my adversity. Now I am not completely over the loss of my father, but I strive for success not only for me, but for him also. I have real motivation I can see every day…
A year ago all I could think about was, what could be any better than being an adult. I had just been a year into my volunteering for Silver Cord (a school volunteer program) when I begun to think I was capable of working, because I enjoyed being able to give back to the community through Silver Cord. I needed something that would give me the chance to work weekly in the same environment. I thought work could grant me the pass to become a responsible adult. When I was hired the idea of being older, with more responsibility started to wear off. I slowly started to learn that becoming an adult took a lot more effort than anyone could’ve expected.…
Time and time again, we look back to acknowledge and celebrate those outstanding individuals who stood for what they believed in. They worked extremely hard to pursue and achieve their goals despite the difficulties. Such men presented themselves as leaders, great thinkers, philanthropists, artists and scientists. A historical figure who has impacted my life and gives me reason to never give up is the Late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.…
