To start off, with when one want’s to gain intelligence it is expected to be permanent to use later in life. In “Flowers for Algernon” Algernon starts to lose information as fast as he was receiving it once he was at the peak of his intelligence.I know this because it says “I put Algernon’s body in a cheese box and I buried him in the back yard. I cried” (Keyes, 240). Then Algernon dies right around the time Charlie is becoming less intelligent, and when he learns of this, and buries Algernon. He cried because he did this experiment with Algernon because represents Charlie's future, and his upcoming well-being. Charlie later leaves New York …show more content…
because he does not want everybody he loves to see him like the way he was. It is expected that intelligence is going to stay with a person and it can be used throughout life, but sometimes it is not always the case.
Additionally, when a person gains a large amount of intelligence or changes their personality in a immense way some may find that more appealing.
Throughout “Flowers for Algernon” Charlie gains a few positive friends and it is when he is when he’s becoming intelligent. As a matter of fact Miss. Kinnian even went on dates with him, but only a couple weeks before that she was teaching him. For example the text says, “Dr Nemur appears to be uncomfortable around me. Sometimes when I try to talk to him, he just looks strangely and turns away.” (Keyes, 236). Furthermore if someone’s personality is vastly impacted some people may enjoy it but others may find them to have too big of an
ego.
For instance, when somebody finds out information that is going to happen to them eventually, everybody takes it differently. When Charlie learns of Algernon’s death and decline of intelligence he is extremely disheartened because he knows that is going to happen to him. This is apparent because it says “I feel the darkness closing in. It's hard to throw off thoughts of suicide.” (Keyes, 240). This is when Charlie is still at the peak of his intelligence and is able to comprehend what is happening to him. Some people may be at peace about what they learn and others may even commit suicide.
Ultimately, when one finds out something monumental whether that be good or bad, people take it differently. Intelligence is something that is thought to be permanent, if it could be possible to get a boost of IQ many people would think it would be a permanent thing like average intelligence that is learned. Some people may find somebody getting smarter, more attractive than the next, because if is a significant change others may find it unappealing. In “Flowers for Algernon” more damage comes from the operation than good. Making humans artificially more intelligent is not a good idea because nature always has its way, of course correcting things that are not meant to be.
