Malcolm Gladwell argues that we have to spend 10,000 hours in order to master a skill. Elon Musk has worked 100 hours a week for more than 15 years which is a total of 76,000 hours. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why he is one of the biggest outliers. Elon Musk is a 39-year-old engineer and entrepreneur. At 28, he co-founded popular e-payment company Paypal. He then went on to start spaceX, the first private company to launch a rocket into space, and Tesla motors, which builds electric cars. A lot of people say and think about creating a better future, but Musk is one of the few who is working every day to make it happen. It hasn’t been easy. He’s gone through difficult times. Changing the world isn’t easy. The year 2008 was particularly rough for Elon. SpaceX had its third launch failure in a row, the Tesla financing round fell through due to the economy, and he was going through a very ugly divorce. All three of his companies were close to death. His divorce is over, and all three companies are alive. Musk has put a lot of his own wealth into his companies. He’s put over $100 million into SpaceX, a little under $100 million into Tesla, and a lot into SolarCity, where he is Chairman.He’s an inventor
and probably the best inventor ever. The Tesla Model S can go from zero to 60 faster than any other street-legal car around.
That includes Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bugattis and any other crazy exotic sports car you can think of. The Tesla Model S P100D, with 760 horsepower and all-wheel-drive, jumped from a dead stop to 60 miles an hour in 2.28 seconds. It's the first car to ever do that in under 2.3 seconds. That's quicker than high-priced supercars like the $1.5 million Ferrari, the $1.1McLaren P1 or the $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder. For comparison, the Tesla Model S P100D costs about about $135,000. Also, those cars have just two seats each and barely any space. The Tesla Model S, on other hand, has a huge trunk and can seat up to seven. Elon Musk is the most talented person to walk this
Earth.
Elon is famous for putting 100 hour weeks consistently. So, to achieve mastery in a particularly field, Elon would need 100 weeks or a little over 2 years. However, Elon’s superhuman commitment and gifts such as photographic memory means what takes 10,000 hours for an ordinary human to master, takes Elon a fraction of that time. Elon is also famous for quizzing his employees vigorously - his employees initially thought he was questioning their skills. Later they realized he was actually learning from them. Considering how super-selective all his companies are when it comes to hiring, Elon is feeding directly from some of the best brains in the fields his companies operate in.
It is very hard to do the superhuman things Elon is doing. It is not as hard to see how he is able to do these things. Elon Musk taught himself computer programming and at the age of 12 he sold the computer code for video game for $500. So I am sure he would have completed 10000 hours of computer programming. In 1995 he started Zip2 , web software company which he sold to Compaq for a huge sum. So 2500 hours per year, he would have completed your expectations in internet . In 1999 he co founded X Com which which merged with Cofinity. PayPal was a subsidiary of Cofinity. PayPal was sold I 2002. There he would have worked in internet banking for 10000 hours. Musk co founded Space X in 2002. SpaceX is one of the just 2 companies awarded prestigious contract recently, along with Boeing.Musk got involved with Tesla in 2004 as an investor. Tesla is already a leader in its category.Solarcity was co founded in 2006. Solarcity is the largest in US in its category. Of course he did not run solarcity unlike other companies. Very likely he would have completed putting 10000 hours of work in each of these fields.Elon Musk has plenty of great inventions, including anbut there is the one invention called a hyperloop. The hyperloop can travel up to 700 miles per hour traveling through tunnels. This will allow people to travel the world in pretty much about an hour. In 20 years from now I think cars will drive themselves of how smart Elon Musk is. It’s ridiculous.
