This map represents the 13 colonies founded by the British between 1607 and the 18th century. This is the original United State in the 18th century.
We must say that the British when they colonized America were a bit late because other European nations had colonized America (both North and South) before the British. The first British settlement in America was in 1607, in Jamestown, Virginia. In 1607 Spain and Portugal had already built a great Empire in South America. The West Indies were colonized by France, Deutschland, Spain and also England.

The 1st reason was probably to imitate the Spanish Empire because at the time European nations were great rivals (there were constant wars opposing the British to the French and to the Spaniards, it was a context of constant competition). Then the 2nd reason was to find gold as Spain and Portugal did in South America. But the 1st settlement was in Virginia and they quickly realized that there were no gold but they persisted because there were other things that were valuable (tobacco, cotton, sugar, fur…).
