Why Digory Rang The Bell In The Magician's Nephew?
What would you do if you peered into a mysterious room, found a small golden bell hanging from an arch with a tiny hammer sitting beside it? In The Magician’s Nephew, Digory was faced with this very decision. Digory should have rung the bell for three main reasons: Digory excitedly wanted to know what would happened if he rang the bell, ultimately learned life lessons by ringing the bell, and happily healed his mother.
The first reason Digory should have rung the bell is he excitedly wanted to know what would happen if he rang it. Because he was so curious, his actions awoke Jadis and she followed him into the wood between worlds. As a result of the trouble Jadis caused, Digory jumped into a different portal, which led to a blank world.

The Narnia series can be seen as a symbolic reiteration of classic biblical stories. The seven books attempt to recreate everything from major events in the Bible – Genesis and Revelation, the creation and end of the world – to popular medieval saint’s life. In The Magician’s Nephew, the reader is first introduced to the world of Narnia, along with Polly and Digory, the first children from our world to enter Narnia. As Genesis tells of the creation of the world, so The Magician’s Nephew explains how Narnia came to exist and introduces the reader to Aslan, the creator and God figure, and Jadis, the Satan figure, through whose presence at creation evil enters the world. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe introduces the four Pevensie children – Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy…

The main themes in Sure Thing are a fresh start and second chances as symbolized by the ringing of the bell. Other themes which are just as important are the emergence of romance, the possibilities of romance (and impossibilities), and the way language can be used to dance in and out of these possibilities. The ability to change a conversation from awkward to a “Sure Thing” with just a few words is something that everyone at some point would love to be able to do. During Bill and Betty’s encounter, a ring of a bell continues to disrupt their connection. Despite the ringing bell, or because of the ringing bell, the two characters are able to establish a connection. The fact that they are ultimately able to establish a connection suggests many things about relationships, such as that timing can play a major role in either beginning or not beginning a relationship. In this play, the bell when rung signifies that something wrong or inappropriate was said and then you have another chance to say the right thing.…
