Does a curfew keep teens out of trouble? A curfew is designed to set rules within a home while still providing freedom for the child. Many parents believe curfews will help prevent teen delinquency and keep teens out of trouble. Curfews are also meant to cut down on dangerous activities such as drinking and driving.
Giving teens a curfew is a nice way of telling them they are too stupid to make decisions on thier own and can not be trusted to come home at a decent hour. Many teens believe that they are independent and should be able to set thier own rules. In a lot of ways, a teen not having a curfew would be smarter than giving them a curfew and causing them to drive home after drinking or drive home high. Giving curfew to a teen when they are not ready to go home will probably make the teen more susceptible to sneak out or find a way to what they want regardless.
Teenage years are a wonderous time. Teens should be responsible for thier actions and should be able to make thier own decisions and deal with the consequences of wrong actions. It is important that a teen have structure as part of thier development but giving a curfew takes away a sense of independence.
Many teens who are not going to participate in “dangerous activity” will still come home at a reasonable time. More rebellious teens will probably stay out later. Not giving teens a curfew could give the parents more of a gage of where the teenager is at socially and what kind of things they are participating in. Giving a teenager freedom and no curfew while still keeping an eye on them and checking in periodically will build a more open, trustful relationship. A teen is more likely to tell thier parents the truth about what they’re actually doing if they have the freedom to do what they want. A teen should not have to lie to thier parents about where they are and what they are doing because they have a curfew. This is unsafe and does not make a good relationship
