One reason dogs should not be chained is because the dog’s chains can become entangled. They could wrap themselves up and hurt themselves, or knock over their food/water source. Dogs have been suffocated trying to get around objects and end up hanging themselves and they even have to sleep and eat around their waste. The dog might shorten their walking distance by wandering around a tree or other object (NHES). If the collar is too tight, it could be uncomfortable and even choke them. The dog has nowhere to go, nothing to do, no reason to live(AC). When dogs are tied up, they are completely vulnerable to bugs and animals that might attack or bite them. If there is a flood, where is that dog supposed to go? How is it supposed to get away? The dog could end up getting bitten by a bug or a scorpion, infecting the dog slowly killing it(NHES). During the occasion a dog is taken of their tether, they might not be as friendly as they were before. They could start biting other dogs and people. They might start barking at nothing because of boredom or frustration(NHES). The area where the dog is tethered becomes theirs, and they make sure everyone knows it. The will take any chance it gets to run away and in some cases the dog doesn’t return because coming back means getting back on the chain.
