In the year of 1924 Robert La Follete stated “our choice is not merely to support or oppose gun control, but to decide who can own which guns under what conditions” (2000). The anti - gun group argues gun ownership is part of the American tradition and gun laws do not determine the crime rate would go down. The American people have the right to have a gun to protect themselves and this is protected by the constitution. The United State Second Amendment stated, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Halbrook 65-84). The Founding Fathers of the constitution included these rights in the Amendment because meant one day try to dominate the people so it is right of the people to have the means to defend themselves as an individual and as a nation. The government can ban guns all they want, and even go as far as not selling guns to only citizens, but every citizen has the right to own a gun according to the second Amendment. Guns are not safe on the street and in the homes as well. Unfortunately, there have been many accident deaths involving children playing with their mum or dad’s gun and accidental discharges because the parents didn’t keep it in a safe place. Moreover, there has been situations where children killed their parents with a gun. Also for the past years there have been many people who have lost loved ones through mass shooting just in the United States. For example, the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida that took place on June 2016. The gunman, Omar Mateen, enters the Pulse gay night club killed 49 innocent people. This has led some people to protest on stricter gun control laws or even ban guns. Although the gun ban was active in “1968, the Gun Control Act was aimed at cheap small guns, such as the low-caliber pistols known as Saturday Night Specials” (Worrall, P. 155, 2015) this ban did not reduce criminal activity. In fact, in the past, there have been state like Washington, D.C. who had banned on guns. Agresti and Smith stated, “during the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law were in effect, the Washington, D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than it was at the outset of the law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower” (2010).
