Why Do I Need My Identity
Through my time searching for my identity as a person as well as establishing my group of friends in school, I begin to understand the concept that a person’s character is developed and shaped based on their environment, experiences, family, and social interactions. I am always grateful that my family has given me a solid foundation and help to shape and reinforce my character development as well as provide the support and guidance towards excellence. My parents taught me the character trait of respect and its importance in my daily life. As a result, I rarely get in trouble at school and consistently show respect to all my teachers as well as my friends. Being the oldest among two other younger siblings, I also get a chance to develop the …show more content…
One major contributor that has a great impact in my life is my church and the mentors in the church. Collectively, these mentors motivate me to grow, remind me to do what is right, and teach me to love and respect others. My involvement in the church outreach events also develop my character trait of citizenship and have given me tremendous opportunities to witness how the poor is facing hardship and challenges in both US and other parts of the world. Since my church consists of people from about twenty-two different countries and my parents are both from Singapore, it provides me a unique environment to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. The richness of diversity allows me to model from their strength and to expand my knowledge from their different cultures. I cherish diversity because I often find myself going beyond whenever I am outside of my comfort zone thus reaching out to people who are different from me; these experiences polish my character and identity further.
