Loss of choice limits society’s acts and words in exchange for what they think is a more superior community. Loss of choice can be presented in a society with rules and regulations. Rules decreases the chance of what the government assumes is inappropriate behaviour. Loss of choice is presented in multiple areas in the book The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau. Citizens lose the choice of decision, the choice to act freely and the choice to speak freely. Chosen graduating students from each colony must attend The Testing if not punishment is presented. They must go through tests, some being life-risking and if they pass all the tests alive, they are qualified for university. They are …show more content…
under constant surveillance with cameras and microphones tracking their moves and words. For the government to remove the freedom of choice does not give in to a more advanced, progressive society. Freedom should not be taken away from people because they deserve to have a say in their decisions, they deserve to act freely and in their own way, and they deserve to speak freely to others.
Humans deserve to have a say in their decisions because without the choice of decision, one can feel stuck and left out in a situation. If they have a say in their decisions they feel involved. “You don’t have a choice. The law states that every United Commonwealth citizen chosen must present him or herself for The Testing by the appointed date or face punishment” (Charbonneau 22). It explains that there is a rule that all chosen has to participate if not then they get punished. Chosen ones have no involvement in the decision to go to The Testing or not. Shows how one feels stuck in this situation because the candidates are stuck to go with the decision/rule that was told to them. People learn from their mistakes. If they choose the wrong decision they will know for next time. This can help them mature and think of the good choices. “My turn. I bet I can do both my problems in less time than it took for Roman to do his” (Charbonneau 124). This testing was in groups and each person was to be assigned a question to answer. A person can do more than one question and if a question was taken again, the person who retakes the question will be punished. Annalise decides to trust Roman and takes her turn although Cia thinks it’s a bad idea and doesn’t trust Roman. Annalise chose the wrong decision. Cia was right not to trust Roman because Roman answered all the questions first before anyone else could. Unfortunately Annalise does not get a second chance but Cia now knows for next time to not trust most people. Removing the choice to have a say in your decisions is not worth a more advanced society because you don’t have a chance to learn from your mistakes. Humans don’t only deserve to have a say in their decisions, they also deserve to act freely.
Individuals deserve to act freely and in their own way.
To not be free is to feel restrained. Feeling restrained will not give in and support to an advanced society. ”my movements are being restricted” (Charbonneau 54). Now that she knows there are cameras she knows she cannot do any “wrong” moves or acts because she is being watched on constant surveillance. Being under constant surveillance will not support an advanced society because people feel violated with knowing cameras are watching their moves. If they are able to act freely they are more motivated and inspired to do better things for the community. “I look at the device in my hands and have an idea. It takes me a few minutes to figure out which series of buttons starts the recording device. Once I do, I begin to talk” (Charbonneau 314). Without cameras in sight, Cia records her experience of The Testing. This recording can benefit the future because she can use this against The Testing even though she gets her memories removed. Removing the choice to be able to act freely is not worth a more advanced society because feeling restrained does not motivate someone to do good things for the community. Not only do citizens deserve to act freely, they also deserve to speak
freely.
Citizens deserve to speak freely to others. If people don’t have free speech, they can’t share opinions with others. They will feel like their opinions don’t matter. If they say something wrong, they don’t want to get punished or ashamed of their words. “With unsteady fingers, I probe for the clasp on my bracelet, work the fastening free, and set it on top of my bag” (Charbonneau 200). Cia is worried and takes off their bracelets with the microphone embedded inside. She is worried because she doesn’t know if they heard her two personal conversations with Tomas and Michal.
She took off the bracelet to step aside and talk to Tomas about the microphone and her personal conversation she shared with him. She doesn’t want to be punished or noticed for knowing about the microphone. If they are able to speak freely people feel loose with their words and finds communicating with others uncomplicating and they feel like they can be more straightforward and out with their point. “Because the first time I tell you that I’m in love with you, I’d rather not share the moment with Dr. Barnes and his friends” (Charbonneau 201). After Cia silently told Tomas about the microphones in their bracelets, takes them off and walks away, Tomas confesses his love for Cia. Without them being listened on they have the ability to speak freely and Tomas decides to be straightforward with his words. Without the microphones and the ability to speak freely, Tomas was able to have an uncomplicated conversation with Cia. Removing the choice to speak freely is not worth a more advanced society because people want to share their opinions and personal information in uncomplicated conversations and to just be straightforward with their words without feeling ashamed. Citizens deserve many things the ability to speak freely being one of them.
Having a smarter and more progressive society can be a good experience for citizens. Without freedom of choice, it decreases the good experience and decreases the pleasure in life. Losing the choices to decide on your own, act freely, and speak your own words are all factors of a poor experience in a society. If people had all these choices, they can live a more loose, unrestricted life. An advanced society gets people thinking and wanting more. If a community is willing to give up some freedom to accomplish this society, they are letting go of many aspects in individual lives.
